Just got an email alert from the NRA. This is a 5 page .pdf from the Sheriffs in Colorado. Basically 62 Sheriffs are going to oppose any new gun control legislation. Well written and worth the read. Hopefully other states will follow suit!!

Good. I think its about time that local and state agencies started telling the federal govenment when and if they want their input on things!

Glad I moved to Colorado. You'd only see a handful of sheriffs in California support the 2A.

Great letter and I'm sending it to my brothers who live in the Springs in case they haven't seen it. Now to get Iowa sheriffs on the ball.

I just sent an email to the Sheriff of Arapahoe county to ask the question of which 2 counties aren't represented. I am assuming it is Boulder and Denver as well. I find it amusing that Magpul's facility is in Boulder!!

Local news was reporting that Sheriffs in the Denver metropolitan area were FOR the bans. This is where most of the population of Colorado reside.

Colorado Sheriffs issue strong pro-gun position statements

While this is not a direct "comittment" to "not enforce" new gun laws, I was delighted to find that the County Sheriffs of Colorado are saying what we've been saying all along:

Hell, I could have written that myself. Maybe your Sheriff should read this.

I was a supporter of mandatory background checks on private sales until now. If all the Sheriffs in Colorado, law enforcement professionals who presumably know their stuff, say it won't help and will be unenforcable, who am I to disagree?

Just got a response from the Sheriff in Arapahoe and apparently Broomfield and Denver don't have an elected Sheriff. That is why Colorado has 64 counties and only 62 Sheriffs represented on the document.

Also, if folks are not doing so - please use the Contact form to send them a thank you note. Sending out letters doesn't always have to be of the "don't you dare..!" variety, and it's good to let your officials know that you appreciate them representing you well.

Forgive my ignorance, but how big a deal is this type of thing?

I'm not being facetious, I have only lived in the States for three years and I genuinely don't know.

Do sheriffs routinely write to politicians about legislation, or is this a 'Holy S***!' history-in-the-making type action that we're seeing here?

I really hope that it is the heroic and unprecedented defense of the Second Amendment that it appears to be.

jamesbeat,

Technically speaking, they are going against the Constitution by taking a stand saying they won't enforce federal law. However, as seen with medical (and more recently, recreational) marijuana use being legalized in states with little reaction from the federal government, it can make a good impact.

It also lets the government know just how ill-received any possible infringement on the 2nd Amendment will be. Having so many LE officials and states tell Obama and others that this will not be acceptable can actually have a large effect.

It is almost unheard of. I've never heard of such a broad movement before. There was some activity by Southern Sheriffs during the Civil Rights movement and legislation, but it was only a few, and those from only a few states.

So it's not like they'll just roll their eyes and say 'it's those pesky sheriffs again...' it's actually a rare thing to happen?

For all I know, all sheriffs could be writing to the politicians every month!

I think that the stance the sheriffs are taking is that the law itself is unconstitutional, so they would be behaving unconstitutionally if they DID enforce it.
I think we all agree with the sheriffs, but I guess that type of thing can only be decided in court.

Either way, those are some brave and righteous men.

Wow, so this really is something that will probably end up in the history books!

Good. I hope it has come as a surprise to the antis and will shock some sense into them.

If this situation wasn't so depressing, it would be pretty exciting...
