642 as a pocket gun - I don't get it?

I have seen a LOT of people who are obviously carrying something bulky in their front pockets here in Arizona, I always reason that it's a firearm, even if it's actually something else, and that's the point.

Well I have stuff in both my front pockets, If folks are going to assume its a gun anyway even if its keys, and a cell phone then why would that dissuade me from carrying?????????????????????

Master Blaster, that's a great point. If someone walks around thinking they have "made" everyone who has a bulge in their pocket, then virtually everyone is carrying a gun nowadays, between cell phones, keys, and all that stuff.

There's a difference between "there's a gun" printing and "there's something in that pocket" printing. The J-frame in a Nemesis doesn't look any different than my cell phone.

Sorry, it still looks like you have an orange in your pocket, especially if the 642 is in a holster (and of course it needs to be).

No way my 642 in either a Mica or Uncle Mike looks like an orange in my pocket. It prints much less than that. And that includes when in a jeans pocket. This is especially true with the Mica.

My AMT .380 Back Up prints in my pocket. You look at my pocket and think "that's a gun in there".

With my S&W 340PD, you can see that something is in the pocket, but you can't tell what it is; it could be a cell phone, or my wallet, or a big bunch of keys.... who knows?.

What everyone needs to remember (and some have already said) is that the vast majority of people don't see guns. I print fairly often (Sig P232 in a IWB holster) and thus far no one has commented on the occasional odd drape of my shirt.

Mostly we're worried about three groups of people seeing our guns:

1. Cops. If it's legal, who cares?

2. Criminals. by far the most threatening group, but also the least common and by and large not the most observant. Think about how Bad Guys carry their guns...jammed IWB of baggy pants, or at BEST in a pocket, so they have to go around holding the gun up and constantly hiking up their drawers, and they still manage to get the drop on one another. OK, I'm joking, but this is the general trend. For a criminal to "make" you, he would have to observe you at a time whn you're printing clearly, observe the "bulge" itself, and identify it as a gun. Possible, but highly unlikely. All things being equal, it's best not to print...but all things aren't equal. I'd rather have a solid gun I can shoot well in a rapidly-accessible position than an invisible gun jammed elbow-deep in my pants.

3. Anti-Gunners who would scream "MY GOD HE HAS A GUN". These people usually need to be whapped upside the head with the cluebat daily to just get through life without wandering off a cliff or forgetting to breathe, so I doubt that their target identification, situational awareness and general perceptive skills are up to the task of readily identifying your 642 in a pocket from a cell phone.

YOU see guns because you're a gun nut. Other gun nuts see guns because they're gun nuts. So, you make your friends and your friends make you because it's what we do. By and large, the rest of the herd is just merrily cropping grass.

I sometimes forget this, but Coronach is spot on with his comment, in my view. And I routinely carry a variety of small semi-autos or small revolvers in an Uncle Mike's # 4 pocket holster, or more commonly, a DeSantis Nemesis. The Nemesis in particular really does a good job of reducing printing.

Small people will always have trouble compared to large people. I am 6 feet tall and weight 250 lbs. I have no problem at all making a J-frame disappear in a front pocket. I'm not fat either. I'm just big. My friend is about 5'7' and weighs around 130lbs. He couldn't pocket carry his snubby if his pockets were knee length.
