Man, I've looked at every gun show that's rolled into town for a nice 35 Whelen bolt gun. Not a darn thing.... ever. Be a neat cartridge to handload for I always thought.

Probably not a whole lot of them around. It would be a good reloader, as '06 brass is plentiful. That would put it one-up over the .350RemMag. I was lucky to get a whole bunch of .350 brass thrown in on the deal when I got the Ruger.

I'd suggest not passing a .350 up if you came across one, as ballistics are identical, but that might be a more rare bird than a Whelen. And again, don't know what the .350 brass situation is these days.

What's the difference in a Custom Deluxe and a Classic? My pop has a 700 Classic in .35 Whelen. It's a nice, light rifle that will beat the soup out of a fella, especially with 250 gr. handloads!

It just intrigues me that a bullet that's that much bigger in a case that's just necked up can carry similar velocities. Looking through data, it's kind of cool to see the capability of it.

I can't really explain it, but it takes less pressure to push a bullet with a larger base diameter. In other words, takes less pressure to push a .358" bullet, than it does a .308" bullet of the same weight. So you can "push" a 358" bullet faster, when you up the pressure equal to what it takes to push the .308" bullet. Did that make any sense? Pushing two bullets, of the same weight, at equal pressure, the bigger diameter one will go faster. ?? That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Haha ya, I get it but I don't at at the same time. ;). Kinda like cruising in a Cadillac on the freeway instead of a Porsche at the same speed?

i think stock finish and metal finish, i have several classic rem 700,s and thats all i see.

I've been looking for one for a long time......sooner or later, or I'll maybe use my last 98 Mauser action and build one. I know, I'm pretty much covered mid caliber with my .338-06, but I dunno, I'm of the belief that one who's owns a bunch of rifles still doesn't have enough...........

When I built my Whelen back in the '90's one could buy a donor VZ24 for around $100, which is what I did. I read somewhere that the VZ24 actions were exceptionally smooth, and they weren't wrong.
Were I in the market for a Whelen today, I'd unhesitantly try to find a Classic. My Dad's is a wispy light rifle, has a long magazine and throat, and is exceptionally accurate.

That's exactly what I have, good ol VZ24 BRNO. Had 2, used one for the 338.
I always liked those 700s in the 35, anytime I'd see one it always seemed like I didn't have the $$ or enough to make the deal. Trust me, I certainly missed out on some nice ones for that reason......
