Its based on the 308 win with a slightly longer case and necked down for the 7mm.

the 7-08 will have less recoil making you a better shot and will do the same job as the '06, you decide.

That's at the muzzle. The superior BC of the 7mm projectile will even that out further down the range and I would bet that at 250-300 the energy figures start to come together pretty quick.
I'm interested in why the OP wants to know how they compare sizewise.

Maybe this is me being too critical but it's probably because he has little knowledge of rifles, an uniformed notion of cartridge power, or both.

Actually, 2,800fps is possible with the 7mm08 and 150gr bullets. Even with a 20"bbl.
In the real world, I can tell little difference between the two. Having shot over 150 deer with the '06, the first coming in 1976, the last, last season, and having shot over 40 with the 7mm08, the last two just two weeks ago, I can tell you that both are extreamly effective deer cartridges.
I actually now prefer the 7mm08. Even prefer it to the parent .308. Even though ballistic charts give the slight edge to the 7mm08 at extended ranges, switching to a heavier bullet with the .30/06 gives it the edge.
What Reloader22 does for the .30/06 and 180-200gr bullets, Reloader17 does for the 7mm08 with 139-160gr bullets.....
For game over 1,000lbs, the edge goes to the .30/06; for 585yd steel silhouetes, the 7mm08 is essentially unequaled.....

If you want a short action rifle with a round that can launch a high bc bullet and is capable of taking almost anything in north america the 7mm-08 is capable.
7mm-08 is the third most popular .308 based round after .308 and .243.
Size wise it is simply a 308 necked down.
7mm is approximately .284"
I wanted it for its slightly increased BC over .30 cal bullets.
I really wanted 260rem but it is such a poorly supported cartridge and really not up to the largest of beasts roaming north america.
270win is a 30-06 necked down, has good BC and range but i wanted a short action rifle that i could convert to use detachable magazines.

I don`t think the difference is arguable 7mm-08 is .420 & the tried and true .30-06 is .417 I think I will keep my 06...... Don`t tell me I don`t know the diff, been doing this over 40 years.

I've heard a lot of people debating these two lately and was simply curious.
WOW! So, when someone simply wants to educate themselves, they shouldn't ask questions? Got it. You're right, I probably don't have the experience with rifles that a tenth of the people on here have. But, I'm willing to bet that when they first started that they didn't know everything there was to know.
I appreciate all of the replies that were actually helpful and answered the question.

While the 308 and 30-06 can share bullets, the 7mm-08 and 30-06 can share powders.
All three of them can share powder.........
