Looking to buy a 9MM. Want it to have 17 shot cap. Ambidextrous controls. Have looked at Glock 17 Ruger SR9 and FNX The SIG329 looks good also. I do not want to buy and try. The question my Brothers is what do you have and why is it the best???? Any input would be great! Thanks for the help:)

"Best" is entirely subjective. With that being said the absolute undisputed top-of-all-lists best is the SR9.

Ranges in my neck of the woods rent guns. Maybe you should shoot many (to determine your personal best) and then buy that one.

The CZ-75B has 17 round capacity, is is about as high quailty as you're gonna find and are not outrageously expensive ( a little over $500,brand new, and I've seen them well under $500 in the last 6 months, at places like Kentucky Gun Store.) It isn't a polymer framed pistol, but they also make those. they also do a compact 75 with a lighter alloy frame. From my personal experience, as well as countless reviews, you simply can't go wrong with one of these.
I've been a Glock owner for nearly 30 years, and they're great, but the CZ-75B is on another level entirely.

edit: LOL, I just noticed you said "striker fired". In that case, look at the HK's, if you want "best", particularly the VP9, which people seem to be raving about (though that SR9 recommended above is an excellent suggestion, and cheaper).

The Glock is the most proven and my choice. Personally I like the 15 shot G-19 much better, you can use 17 round magazines if needed. I don't find the G-17 any more accurate and the slightly smaller G-9 just feels better. I keep the 15 round mag in the gun with 17 round spares. There are 33 round magazines readily available and reasonably priced.

OP- Unless you are willing to "buy and try" you're never going to find the one that's best FOR YOU. I can tell you all about how among that list, the SR9 would be best (or those options) FOR ME but I am not you.

I, and I think probably every person on this board has bought a gun and usually several that we all thought would be the one perfect gun, but then you realize that there are others or your needs have changed, or your budget changed enough that if you trade in your perfect gun + a little cash, you can have an even "more perfect" gun, and the list goes on and on.

I the to break it to you, but if you're already in search of "the best" you've got the bug and there is no cure.

My favorite is the SR9. Some folks can't get buy the fact that it has a safety, but that's one of the reasons I have it. If you've never trained with a safety on a semi-auto pistol, it might not be for you as we've all heard of incidents where shooters forget to disengage the safety. I can't imagine that, but it does happen. On the other hand, I won't allow a Glock in my house.

If you have time to look before you buy, try the feel and balance and pointing characteristics of the H&K's, Springfields, Rugers, Smiths, etc., then pick up a Glock. It will feel like a piece of wood.

A used SR9 would be a wonderfully inexpensive but good quality gun. That would be true of various used Glocks, used M&P Pros, etc. You've got a lot of options. I've had all of those, and like them all. The price would be the determining factor for me. (I have no experience with the XD guns.)

The new striker-fired SIG is something I've yet to handle, but I like SIGs but don't love their DA/SA triggers. The new 329 might be the best of both worlds for me. You're talking about a big range in prices, here. Except for the 329, I wouldn't buy NEW, I'd buy used.

I really like the fns. I plan on getting the new compact version sooner than later to compliment my fnx. My fns40 has been flawless, bug now that 9mm is available again, I think I want one in that flavor.

I agree w/what others have already posted, try as many as you can before buying.
SIG P320 fullsize takes 17rd mags, has an ambi slide stop, reversible mag release, excellent trigger right out of the box and great reviews. Along w/the H&K VP9 & Walther PPQ, the P320 is considered one of the best striker-fired pistols currently available.
The P320C takes 15rd mags but can also use the full size 17rd mags.

Striker fired 9x19mm pistols....

Depending on your budget and tastes, you can find a 9x19mm close to your needs.
Pistols Id look at include; the SIG 320, the Glock 22 or 23 .40(that can quickly convert to different calibers: 9x19mm, .357sig, .22LR), the FNS 9mm, Walther PPQ, S&W SD9VE, HK VP9.

I love the SR9 (c), 'cause I shoot it so darn good. Trigger is awesome. Ergos just as awesome. I train with the thumb safety so it's memory muscle by now, and I can live with the mag disconnect. But... you gotta get the right gun for you.

The only advantage I can see with the G-17 (and I own one) over the XD is that I can also use the G-18 33 round mag in it (as well as in the G-19 and G-26)

Otherwise, I consider them to be equal

Best for me, excellent quality and ergos...but not in any particular order....
Walther PPQ (17 rnd mags available) or
H&K VP9 (haven't seen any 17 rnd mags yet)

Then:
CZ P09 (19 rounds) and excellent quality
only downside for me was small sights, and you must change your shooting grip to operate all controls

Sig P320/P250 are also very good, not sure on 17 round mags tho

Get a Glock because they rock and clean criminal’s clocks without the need to be kept cocked and locked.

Is that some sort of Rap lyric??

As for the OP, get which ever one fits your hands the best where you can operate the controls... All of your choices are known to be quality firearms, none of them have a leg up on the other as for operation.. Accessories go to Glock of course. (Because you have to replace 90% of parts to make a decent shooter... lol)

Shot many guns and I keep going back to the Glock 17. Walther PPQM2 and HK has a new striker fired handgun. Sig just came out with a striker fired gun I think it's a P320. I just love the Glock 17 gen 4 it's a awesome gun and one tough pistol.

Your 17-round capacity requirement excludes some great guns like the Walther PPQ, HK VP9, Styer, and Glock 19.

I own an XDm with 19 round capacity and have owned a Glock 17. If you're sticking to that round count, I'd choose the Glock as the XDm is ungainly with that giant mag.

Thank you all. Just the kind of information I was looking for. Glaring problems and such. I have to get to the range and try a few!

If I were to buy a polymer, striker fired pistol it would be an HK VP9.

VP9, P320, M&P, SR9....so many great options.

Of course for the ultimate ambi pistol you have the CZ 85. But then again you have to give up on the old striker fired requirement, and live with a 16 round mag.

This thread makes me want to hunt up a CZ 85 now that I mention it.

Don't know much about the FNX-9 but I sure like my FNX-45.
As for actual 9's I also really like my Sig P228 and Walther P99 16 round guns..I know 1 round short.
I also have a Glock 17, and just don't like it, mostly the grip angle bugs me....
