I know Taurus is coming out with a 9mm 1911 and I heard Rock Island is too. Has anybody tried these or other low-cost 9mm 1911's?

Also does anybody know if the Advantage Arms conversions would work on 9mm 1911s?

Thanks

I wouldn't get a 9mm 1911 unless it's designed specifically for that cartridge from the chamber back, like a Springfield EMP, Para PDA, NHC Lady Hawk or maybe the STI. There's too many compromises just putting in spacers to make up for the smaller cartridge.

I'd get a Hi Power instead. I've had two of them, they're the "1911 perfected" and designed from the get go for 9mm.

not low cost, but i have a few 9mm 1911's

as for .22 conversions, you have to make sure it works with a ramped barrel. i know that my Wilson/Marvel will work on my 9mm's, while my Wilson/Ciener will not.

I have thousands of rounds through my STI Trojan that I use for IDPA. Not only does it perform like a champ, it has never had a single malfunction of any kind, ever. Minimal recoil while competing and accurate to boot...whats not to like?

...REALLY like that little EMP in the photo above! Makes me want one!!

I don't know a whole lot about 1911's but could you get a .45 and then put a 9mm slide on it?

Yep, you can replace the entire top end, along with the ejector, slide release and magazines, and you are good to go. Note that converting back and forth between .45 and 9mm will involve changing the ejector every time.

It is somewhat simpler to buy a 1911 in 38 Super and get a 9mm barrel, recoil spring and magazines.

you also have to make sure that you have the correct barrel for the frame. most 9mm 1911's use a ramped barrel/frame, while the .45's don't.

The above posts are correct and the parts will swap. However, the frame's ramp angle will be different and you may or may not get the same reliability as with a proper 9mm frame.

9mm 1911's have all kinds of possibilities...............................

PS: You can get your .45 slide milled to accept the 9mm ejector. It involves deepening and widening one of the slots, making it identical to the Commander milling. I have a custom built 1911 (above) that works with three slides, and shoots .45, 10mm, and .38S/9mm (both barrels in the same slide).

Im not going to say that the BHP is the 1911 perfected....because it is not.

I just know that both times I went searching for a 9mm 1911 I came back with a BHP the first time and a CZ-75 the second.

There are 9mm pistols and then there are other pistols masquerading as 9mm pistols.

Very happy with my Dan Wesson PM-9. Unfortunately, they will be discontinued next year.

BHP?

Fine gun to be sure but not in the same class as a 1911.

I have an STI Trojan in 9mm. Fine gun, good trigger, deadly accurate, 100% reliable. $900.

I have a BHP done by a famous smith that is a good gun, impressive bragging rights, a vision to take your breath away and massive sex appeal. Trigger is OK, accuracy is OK but not nearly as good as a 1911. $2,400.

Anyone have any experience with the new S&W 1911 in 9mm? I was curious about it, although now that I reload I am less interested in 9mm and really enjoying the 45!

I have a 9mm Springfield "Loaded". It's been reliable and a nice gun.

At first, the trigger was a bit rough but after a few hundred rounds, it's very nice.

For an interesting alternative, consider a Star Model B or BS.
Looks and handles exactly like a 5" 1911,
slightly slimmer
Designed from the start for 9mm
Most have good triggers and are accurate.
Nice ones can be found for $200 - $300

I think if the chambering is 9mm then the BHP is very much in the same class as the 1911 perhaps it could even be reworded to read: 1911? Fine gun to be sure but not in the same class as a BHP?

If we are talking 45, then yes. The BHP is not even close to the 1911.

Well the BHP is a very similar single action firearm. Operationally, the same as the 1911 (carry cocked and locked, push down to release the safety). But for 9mm, the BHP has much higher magazine capacity than a 1911.

I have both a 9mm 1911 and a FEG clone of the BHP (i've had a couple of Brownings, but they were junk).

Why would you get a 9mm 1911 when you can get plenty in 45? After all, a 9mm is just a 9mm, and a 45 is a 45. ;)

That's the point. To some, a 45 is just a 45, and 9mm is a 9mm:evil: If I am buying a gun to punch paper holes with only...I would get the 9mm 1911.

Yes, that's why I have the 9mm 1911. Ammo is a lot cheaper even if you reload. It's good if you want to practice with a 1911 with less costly ammo. That being said, I probably would not buy one again, I don't know how much 1911 practice I really need.

I jest, I'm not really a caliber snob, but I do like my 45. If you can get the best, why not use the best? :D
