I've wanted a 1911 since...forever. It's one of two handguns that made an inedible mark on me as a kid, that and a Ruger Mark II. However, I don't really want to invest in 45acp. I'm all in 380 and 9mm and I like it that way. Got a few questions though....

1) I used to hear horrible things about 9mm 1911s, is that the case today as well?

2) What's the consensus on Rock Island Armory 9mm's? I get a generally positive vibe about their 45's considering the price, but not as much information is available on the 9's.

3) Anything special I need to know about 9mm 1911's that varies greatly fromm a 45? Or about the Rock Island ones?

The one I'm considering in particular is their parkarized 5" model. (http://www.joeboboutfitters.com/Rock_Island_1911_9mm_5_Parkerized_51615_p/gun-rockisland-51615.htm), looked like a good starting point.

Bonus question: I'm a striker fired guy mostly at this juncture, will I notice a difference in accuracy from my striker fired handguns to the 1911 9mm platform?

I have an RIA Ultra FS (#51623) 9mm that now has abut 1,500 rounds through it without a failure so I'm quite h.

I have been shooting a Springfield 9mm Range Officer for a year with great success. Very accurate and 100% reliable.

I have a RIA Tactical model in 9mm and I'm very happy with it! That's RIA #4 for me, love 'em all.

They have a name for 9mm 1911's, Browning Hi Power :D

I know the trigger on the BHP isn't great but I don't see the attraction of a 1911 chambered for 9mm over a CZ-75B with the SA-only trigger.

With the CZ you're getting the same manual of arms, flip-down frame mounted thumb safety, carry it cocked and locked and all that, and a pretty good trigger.

The only real difference I see is the grip safety, but I didn't read in your OP that you really really wanted a grip safety.

That's a joke buddy, relax.
I got it. And, it made me chuckle. :)

Remove the mag disconnect and it changes the trigger and personality of the BHP and it's clones dramatically.

I've got 9mm 1911s and they're great - easy to shoot, fun, and accurate, and smoking fast. I haven't had an RIA 9mm but I have owned one of their .38 Supers and a .45 and they're solid, reliable guns for the money. Keep in mind that you're looking at a basic GI style gun with crappy little sights and that RIAs do not get a ton of attention when it comes to fitting and finish, that's how they keep them cheap. So, it's hard to say how the trigger will be, how well you'll be able to use the sights, etc. compared to what you're used to.

That said, RIAs hold their value pretty well so if it turns out that you really like the gun you won't lose any money on it when you want to upgrade to a better quality version like a Springfield Range Officer or Colt Competition Model.:D

Over the fullness of time, I have owned one (1) Colt Commander in 9mm, three (3) Springfield Loaded in 9mm, seven (7) RIA 9mm Tacticals, and four (4) Kimbers in 9mm. Most of these were gifted, after a time, to somebody or another. In fact, I gifted a NIB 9mm RIA Tactical to my live-in nephew this past Christmas, as his first handgun.

The only ones with which I had any issue were the Springfields - the typical extractor clocking of the Springers is even worse in their 9mm variants - but they were easily fixed and otherwise satisfying. Other than that, 9mm 1911's are a joy to own; light recoil, cheap to feed, and all of the traditional 1911 yumminess.

Every one gets the OEM magazine tossed in favor of the Springfield/Leatham design magazine :

Thanks for the feedback. As far as the CZ comment goes, I want one of those as well, but I've just wanted a 1911 forever. I actually dislike grip safties distinctly, but I can live with it.

And for HiPowers, I won't own a gun with a magazine disconnect, except while I'm waiting to remove it. Don't train that way, don't want that hassle.

Gotta agree, although in my youth I didn't think they had enough recoil. Silly me. My 9MM S&W. I am running Metalform & Wilson Mags.

+1 I have a friend that has a LW Commander in 9mm, was his Dad's. He brings it with on our range trips just to let me shoot it, and it is a pure joy. He'll never sell it, and won't carry it, despite it being a great carry gun. He plans on passing it down to grandkids in time.

I have 3 1911s in 9mm,a S&W,Springfield RO and a RIA Tactical. All have been very reliable and shoot as well as I am able to do. The Smith is at Clark's being fitted for a 9x23 barrel. The RIA has had better sights put on it,the sear spring broke had a local smith replace it and had him switch out the plastic MSH. All feed reliably with the magazines that came with the pistols but I picked up spares from Tripp,Wilson and Metal Form and all those mag are 100% reliable.
