I'm trying to find out if +p ammo is too heavy for my beretta92fs.anyone know where I can get info about this? The owner manual doesn't answer my question.thanks.

Why do you feel that you need +P loads? Standard pressure will do anything you need and allow your gun to last much longer.

Manual here. From the document, it should be fine, though they don't recommend extended use of +P, +P+, and submachine gun ammo in the pistol.

+P loads won't dramatically affect the wear rate of the pistol, though the springs may need replacing five hundred rounds or so sooner.

It also won't dramatically affect the performance of the rounds on an angry target.

Pretty much all of the best designed defense bullets these days work equally well as standard pressure or +P, sometimes they even show a hair more desirable overall performance as a standard pressure load.

For instance, in 147 grain HST, the expansion of either normal or +P is basically identical, while the standard pressure version often penetrates a half inch or so deeper, and generates a bit less recoil. Since the load is already big on expansion and moderate on penetration, giving up even a small amount of penetration for marginally wider expansion may not be that great a balancing call.

One of the biggest reasons I would want to carry a +P version of a given load would be to help functioning, just in case something is squirrely and I'm not firing the gun off at the range, it's possible that I might not have the best textbook grip and firing stance, and the feeding process could benefit from a little more rearward energy in the slide.

Can we assume that you just left out the alpha designators when asking the question...you really don't see a beretta 92 that often.

The 92FS will be fine with +P and if you are concerned, you can get a model with the beefed up Brigadier slide. They have long since addressed the only weakness of the 92 by redesigning the locking block (I think they are in Gen3 or Gen4)

For those asking about +P loadings. I've always carried various 9mm platforms with +P (Speer) or +P+ (Ranger), not so much because I thought the regular loadings lack something but because of the slug I wanted to use (124gr Gold Dot & 127gr Talon respectively)

Beretta 92s were handling the older standard pressure loads just fine before the +P designation came along. The older standard pressure was 35,700 CUP and although a different system of measurement, if these loads are tested in the SAAMI PSI system they will be at or just under the current pressure rating for +P at 38,500 PSI. I doubt you'll find any European pistol makers whose pistols are not designed for sustained use with the European CIP max. of 36,200 PSI which again is very close to the old CUP standard of 35,700 and the newer rating for +P at 38,500 PSI. As far as pistols made in the US, any quality pistol should be rated for +P, if it isn't, I wouldn't buy it.

As for the added benefit of using most +P loads, they will will help to insure that jackets reliably expand while penetrating 12" and imparting more energy into the target. In reality, what you shoot today that's rated +P is no different from loads when the standard pressure was 35,700 CUP before SAAMI decided to lower pressure to 35,000 PSI/33,000 CUP ;)

9mm... I was lucky enough to be allowed to carry one of those old 92 Berettas (with European mag release at the bottom of the grip area). It was a confiscated weapon that had been coverte to City use. I shot better at the range over every course of fire with that sidearm than any I've ever carried. It really hurt to have to turn it back in when my Department finally forbid carrying any first generation weapons... without the hammer block integral safety to prevent AD's if dropped. Over the five years I carried it I never had the first problem with it. Those bad feelings were gone when we were issued Sigs in 40 cal with night sights....

in response to why +p

I bought this 92fs new.the spring is stiff and it chokes on ball ammo (remington from walmart),so I tried +p with no stovepipng or jams.my older taurus pt92 cycled the remington ammo fine due to being well broken in.thanks guys for all yoir input.its good to have experienced people willing to help.

The Beretta 92 has served police forces across the USA as their issue weapon. Police forces typically use 9mm +P and +P+ ammo in their duty weapons. If there ever was a problem with such ammo in the 92 there would be plenty of information regarding that. Use +P and even +P+ ammo in your 92 with confidence that it will not damage your pistol. The higher pressure ammo may increase wear over standard pressure but that's the penalty you pay for the extra power. For the ordinary gun owner who pays for their own ammo that will likely never be a problem.

I shoot standard pressure ball and hand loaded ammo for practice from my 92F but keep it loaded with Ranger 127gr SXT +P+ for personal and home defense.
