Until you compare having a handgun vs not having a handgun when just harsh words won't do...

9mm- Cheaper, higher cap mags in less space, full mag weighs less with more rounds, depending on gun easier to shoot for most shooters, gets the job done just as well as any other round with proper shot placement.

I'd say my favorite autopistol round is the 9mm. Have shot lots and lots of different models, and lots and lots of 9mm through my preferred Glocks. It will hit hard enough to do the job, is cheaper, lighter and easier to learn to shoot well with and remain proficient with, IMO. The fact that I can carry plenty of rounds on board is icing on the cake.

Perhaps it just comes down to remembering that your pistol is a tool. You should be counting on your head to keep you out of and get you out of trouble first and foremost.

Someone, can't remember who, has a line in his signature that says something like, 'the debate over which is better, .45 or 9mm hasn't been settled in a hundred years of arguing, and it ain't for lack of corpses to study" or very near to that.

It's matter of personal preference, and we all know about opinions.

Once you get past a certain threshold (I'd say 9mm, others would say .380 or something else even) defensive pistol calibers (9mm, .40, .45 a.c.p., .45 g.a.p., .357 sig, .38 special, 38 super, etc etc) are basically all the same. Provided you use proper ammunition there isn't going to be a huge difference. If people spent as much time at the range as they did debating various calibers, we could all just carry BB guns since we'd be able to shoot people in the brain every single time.

What I carry is small enough to carry all the time. It's a 45acp eleven shot sub compact. If I really thought "today is the day" I'll need to USE my pistol I'd be packing a 10mm full size sixteen rounds of 200gr jhp at 1225fps for around 700 ft pounds of ME. On the other hand, if I really thought "today is the day" I'd stay home, have my 7.62X51 loaded up with twenty round mags, bipod extended and night scope with fresh batteries.

My pick would be the 9mm. What rides with me every where I go is a S&W model 65 with 140gr hollow points and an ammo wallet with another 18 rounds.

A friend talked me into killing a dog he was having a problem with. I took my 1911 "Manstopper" loaded with a mag full of 230gr FMJ "Manstopper" bullets to do the deed. I put 5 rounds through the chest and one round in the neck and killed that 90lb dog. Finally. I wish I would have taken a .22 instead.

After that I sold my 1911, the dies, brass and all the kit that went with it and have never wanted another.

That was 20+ years ago. I have never killed another dog. I don't solve other peoples problems for them anymore either.

I want to add that if a 45ACP makes you feel secure and you are a good shot with it, then by all means use it. You could do a whole lot worse.

I like 9mm as it is cheaper to shoot. .45 ACP is a very close second in my handgun caliber preferences.

Shoot the biggest bullet you can manage well. .22, 9mm, .45, .44, it doesn't matter what you miss them with, or hit them with. But if you cannot manage the pistol, you are wasting your time and self.

Having done in a couple dogs with .22 Stingers, and examined the damage they make, I trust them frequently. But bigger is more "persuasive". At least I can reload my own 9's and .45's.

Im sure its been asked a hundered times, but do you prefer 9mm or .45 Or other?
:scrutiny:

Now that has got to be the understatement of the month.

I don't prefer either.

What I prefer is redundant polls.

I voted for the 45 ACP, but, there is a caveat that needs to be addressed.

Do I get to choose the ammunition that will go in this gun, and have reasonable access to resupply?

While the 45 Is popular here in the United States, the same cannot be said for the rest of the world. I would, and do so today at times, carry a 9mm. With that said, if ammunition is questionable, and I'm in the United States, I'll take the 45. :)

I respect the 45 auto and if hp's didnt exist i would pick the 45 hard ball
over 9mm fmj anyday . But being they have such good 9mm defense rounds available i prefer the 9mm . You can shoot a little faster and they hold more .
Plus iam a Beretta and High Power fan so i prefer those designs. But admit the 45 is one powerful round .

I choose 9mm because it is more economic, easier to use and I can carry more in one magazine. Also, as far as I can tell the .45 is not all its cracked up to be.

Comparing the two side by side, by looks alone, would have you believe the .45 is about twice as powerful as the 9mm. However physics being physics that is not the case. If you had the .45 slug moving at 9mm speed that would be a different story! But alas, such is not the case with .45 acp.

I'm not a .45 hater. Actually I've currently got a crush on the Ruger P345. However I don't believe the .45 is leaps and bounds better than the 9mm on stopping power.

+.45ACP

I live in California under the curse of the 10rnd mags. All things being equal, I'd rather have .45 than 9mm. It's a simple choice.
I'd have liked to recently bought a Glock 19, but California make my choice for me, I went with the Glock 30.

I voted 9mm. Its what i carry 90% of the time. When it gets real cold here and im wearing a snowboard jacket, i'll carry my 10mm. But its not often that i do.

Krochus: i like this one better

In the cartoon drawing in one of the early posts, what does it mean when the .45 fell short? Is it because of a lower velocity?

That's suppose to represent the ineffectiventess of a .45 at that particular range. Since you asked the question, I assume you may be unfamiliar with ballistics. The cartoon was a spoof. At 50 yards, a .45 has no problem reaching its target. If you shoot someone past about 21 feet in sefl defense, then it probably wasn't.

well, i wouldnt want to be shot by anything, but i am a 45 guy. i took up reloading and cast bullets to feed my addiction. but if it ever comes down to it, i would really rather have a 45 on my hip than any other gun for s.d.
krochus, while your stick figures are, well, humorous, i think we all get the point you are trying to make. to a certain extent, i understand your veiwpoint, i think you would change your mind in a hurry if you were on the recieving end of any of the calibers above. most shootings are going to be within 50 feet, and any of the above will kill at those ranges!

I have no faith in size/diameter/weight of any round.

Now...I understand the factual results of accuracy.

Both side arm calibers are adequate if accurate and totally worthless if not.
