I honestly like both. These threads remind me of an essay on chuckhawks.com
entitled "The Gut Wrenching Nightmare of Caliber Worship".

Shot placement

I have gone from .357 to .45 to 9mm over the course of the last 20 years. Once I started to carry everyday, I was carrying a Kimber Ultra CDP with 2 spare mags, 21 shots total. I feared the day I might need to use all 21 shots. Once I started collecting 9mm CZ's my overall views changed on caliber. I have developed a very good training routine shooting the CZ Compact, double taps the chest and a single shot to the head. The quick second and third shot placement from the 9mm is far better than what I got from the .45. Even using +P in the 9mm and standard in the Kimber, plus I can carry 10 rounds in the gun and a 19 round reload. Shot placement trumps caliber for me. Mike

38 super........its just plain faster than 9mm and more capacity in a 1911 than a 45

You know, 9mm vs. .45 in a handgun I'd have to go .45 every time.

9mm isn't a bad round per se. It's great at what it was designed for: high volume fire. It's a great round for a sub-machine gun or some other automatic weapon that sprays a ton of it all over the place. The reason rounds like 9mm were created is they figured out a bunch of small bullets do more damage than one big one. But in a situation where you might only get one shot? I'll choose the bigger bullet every time.

Personal preference

It's all up to the person would you rather have 15+1 like my sig 250 in 9mm has or 13+1 like my glock 23c has in .40 caliber or 7+1 in a sig sauer p220 with todays hollow points they are all the same go with the winchester ranger t series thats what i have that is the best better than the sxt's go on the winchester website remember this if you have the 45 and there is a dozen assailants like a gang or something you are screwed the 9mm or the 40 and you are ok

justin:

Respectfully, IF you are threatened by a dozen assailants, like a gang or something, you are SCREWED, period.

Unless you being attacked by a group, or gang of UNARMED bad guys I don't care how many guns, or how many rounds those guns are loaded with, you are in deep doo-doo, because those ALL of those guys ARE gonna be sending lead in your direction in multiples of what you are sending in theirs..

My understanding is that in WW1 Medal of Honor Winner Sgt. Alvin York had the presence of mind, skill, and mental ability to face off a squad of German soldiers by "picking off the last one first, and working his way to the front"...

I would suggest that unless you exceptionally skilled under such conditions you would NOT be starting at the back and working forward.. You would point and shoot at the nearest targets while at the same time your bladder and sphincter muscle would be yelling "release, release, empty now, empty now" and your "fight or flight" instinct would be yelling "run, shoot, no, run, no shoot" while your heart would be pounding at 500 beats per minute, and your blood pressure would be 220/200, or somewhere wayyyy above average.

So, my opinion is that whatever pistol or revolver you can shoot the best, and have practiced with, and are comfortable shooting is the absolute best one for you.. All things being equal in that scenario a bigger bullet is preferred when you have a choice.. MORE bullets are preferred when you have a choice.

But truthfully I don't think it makes a hill of beans whether you have a 5 shot snubby revolver or an 8 shot 45ACP, or a 15+1 Sig 250, because the shootin's going to be all over with very few rounds fired in a standard confrontation with one or two threats, and if you have the misfortune to encounter a gaggle of threats, or a covey, or a herd of such bad guys as a gang of a dozen the best thing to do is bend over, grab your ankles and kiss your butt goodbye.

Anyway... Even if you had the Sig P250 loaded with top quality 15+1 self defense jhp rounds it's entirely possible (Murphy's Law applies here) the bad guys might consist of SEVENTEEN vs !5+1 and you are still SOL, plus that 17th guy is gonna be really pissed after watching you gun down his 16 buddies..:cuss:

Just personal opinion, no offense.

Jesse

Preference

Well it is just my preference to have more rounds my carry choice is my glock 23c bigger holes than the sig 9mm only 2 less rounds loaded with winchester ranger t series they are the best go on the winchester website and see for yourself my dad is a retired cop and my uncle is a lieutenant in nj in a small town next to camden nj the worst city in america and they both swear by the sxt then i showed them the winchester and fbi test results and whatnot now they are all about the ranger t series the 9mm expands to that only previously attained by a 40 cal and the 40 expands to that only before attained by a 45 cal and the 45 must be seen to be believed and my glock 23c has a tungsten recoil rod for less felt recoil and a 3.5 # trigger connector for quicker follow up shots so i have 4 extra mags for the glock also

it's all bullet placement

If any of you are police officers you know. What do they teach you about in the academy it's all about bullet placement even a 22lr will kill a person if it is placed perfectly center mass or between the eyes. A person isn't going to die immediately if you only get an arm shot or shoot them in the shoulder with a 9mm or 45 cal it won't make a difference it's all about bullet placement. And the 45 is too heavy and slow i can outrun a 45 bullet it's too slow.

Having accuracy in a gunfight

YOU ARE NOT GOING TO HAVE ACCURACY IN A GUNFIGHT TRY RUNNING A QUARTER MILE THEN DOING 20 PUSH-UPS THEN SHOOT AT A MOVING TARGET, THAT'S WHY YOU NEED MORE AMMUNITION THIS WILL MIMIC WHAT YOUR BODY AND MIND WILL BE LIKE IN A GUNFIGHT THAT'S WHY THE 9MM IS A FINE CHOICE ALL OF YOU PEOPLE THAT SAY THE 45 IS BEST MIGHT BE DEAD IN A REAL LIFE SITUATION BECAUSE OF RUNNING OUT OF BULLETS IT'S ALL ABOUT PLACEMENT AND THE MORE HOLES IN SOMEONE THE BETTER CHANCE THEY WILL BE INCAPACITATED. EVERYONE WHO DOUBTS ME TRY THE RUNNING PUSH-UP THEN MOVING TARGET TEST TO SEE HOW YOU DO THIS MOVING TARGET CAN BE UP TO AT LEAST 25 YARDS ALSO. I CAN OUTRUN A 45 TOO IF YOU SHOOT A 45 DOWN THE BLOCK I CAN RUN AROUND THE BLOCK AND CATCH IT AT THE END OF THE BLOCK.:cool: DON'T FORGET TO LOAD WITH WINCHESTER RANGER T SERIES ROUNDS THEY ARE A REDESIGNED TALON MUCH BETTER LAW ENFORCEMENT ROUND

"Shampoo is better! I clean the hair!"
"Conditioner is better, I leave the hair silky and smooth!"

I like how this argument gets brought up over and over. Like it's ever going to be solved.

Isn't the statistic that most gunfights are over after about 3 shots? I prefer .45, because it makes a larger hole and larger holes bleed out faster.

I vote .454 casull. Why? Cause nobody voted for it yet and I didnt want it to be left out. And besides I didnt want the 10mm guys to feel like they had won with the biggest and baddest.

In a pinch , I will take whichever one I can get my hands on. I prefer a 45acp though. It has a proven track record, even with ball ammo.
The 9mm also has a record, but not a very good one. The 9mm will get the job done , but it is more ammo dependent.
To me, the 45acp make sense. It is big and slow.....kind of like a cannonball. I have never had to shoot anyone with a 45acp, but I know that I have faith in it to do what it was designed to do......if it doesnt, then I will pay that fiddler when it comes.

i love the .45 because 9MM has so much speed there have been cases where it can pierce the victim and continue on to cause unwanted casualties. the .45 in a 230 Gr JHP can cause great damage while limiting the possibility of over penetration and you create a larger hole for blood to flow out of than the 9...of course everyone has their own opinions so we are really just preaching to the choir but it is fun none the less

I find it rather interesting that soo many feel that the 9mm wins hands down because of mag capacity. For years our law enforcement were given 6 shot revolvers and were never outgunned. I can't recall the web sight, but I read an article stating that a survey showed, in police shootings, the 1911 45acp had a MUCH higher hit rate in police shooting than the high capacity 9mm, mainly Glocks. All too often LE point their 9's at a subject and just spray bullets. Usually in a gun fight, LE never have to reload their 8shot 1911.

Many officers are woefully unprepared for firefights, if an policeman is carrying his own gun he is likely a better shot.

I'd probably like a 9mm if I were in any other country, but Americans are bear sized :D so i'll stay w/ .45

how many people have been in gunfights

how many people have been in gunfights????????????????????
been through the police academy??????????????????????

which hurts more???????????????
was it ranger t series ???????????????/

50 cal desert eagle

WELL IF YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT CAPACITY OR SIZE MINE AS WELL DO IT RIGHT GO WITH THE 50 CALIBER DESERT EAGLE

IT'S ALL ABOUT PLACEMENT AND WHAT ROUND YOU CARRY IN IT RANGER T SERIES IS BEST ANYONE WHO SAYS ITS ABOUT THE SIZE NOT PLACEMENT IS A MORON AND OBVIOUSLY HAS NO TRAINING UNLESS YOU MEAN YOU ARE USING THOSE ROUNDS THAT EXPLODE ON IMPACT YOU CAN MAKE THOSE YOURSELF/ PUT A PRIMER IN A HOLLOW POINT BULLET AND YOU CAN SEE HOW IT WORKS :eek::eek::eek::eek:
