9mm w/ Titegroup - too full?

I'm loading 9mm under a 125 gr Lead Truncated Cone bullet with 3.7 grains of Titegroup. I'm looking at load data for 45acp with Titegroup to be about 4grains.

It doesn't make sense to me that a case so much smaller than 45acp would use almost as much powder and the cases look fairly full.

I don't know if it's compressing the powder...it doesn't look like it. Also, the TC bullets I'm using are being seated to just barely above the lube, which is much higher than the way I load 45acp....which I seat to right where the cone meets the flat area.

Does this sound right? I'm new to loading 9mm as of this weekend, and haven't fired a round yet.

The .45 and 9mm work off 2 different pressures. In many powders 9mm uses as much powder as a .45.

How you seat your 9mm is exactly how I do it and how you seat .45 is how I did it for years.

All sounds good.

Yep, my 230 grain .45acp loads and 115 grain 9mm loads both use 4.5 grains of titegroup.

I pack my 9mm with 115 gr FMJ and 4.1-4.2gr of Titegroup for a mild load. 3.7 sounds close to what you'd need.

navyLT: holy crap! 4.5 grains is enough that I'd be compressing the charge with the bullet? is this ok? I thought it was a big no no.

My standard 9x19 load is 4.2gr TG with a 124gr PRN.

I use 4.2 grains of Titegroup in my 9mm loads and that fills the case maybe half way, probably less. If you are looking at a almost full case with Titegroup and think you might be compressing it then I think you should double check your load. That sounds like way too much powder to me.

I loaded a few hundred more last night. about 3.8 grains of titegroup and a 125 gr Lead TCBB bullet.

Upon careful examination, I'd say there's probably about 1/16" of room left in the case after I seat the bullet.

Since my personal favorite load is 45acp 2.5 grains of titegroup under a 230gr tcbb and that can be quadruple charged without compressing the powder, maybe I'm just a little too cautious about having air space.

Compressing the charge essentially creates a bomb, does it not? Like if I over seat a bullet, we're talking about enough pressure to blow out the back of the casing or the barrel....

Rifle shooters compress loads all the time. Just because it's compressed, doesn't necessarily mean its dangerous.

No. If you have a good gun with good case support, you probably won't get a kaboom. Search for "Clark" and check into the testing he's done on various guns with nuclear loads. I don't recommend this loads, but he's quadrupled charged loads. The primer pocket is the first thing that will fail, by the way.

Just use the starting loads in the books and keep OAL as listed in the books.

2.5 gr's of Titegroup? Must be like shooting a .22. By the way, going under a listed load can be dangerous also.
