Around roughly an hour some 17 y/o guy tried to force his way into my home, first claiming that he was looking for someone, asked to check my bathroom. I do not know who he was looking, I thought it his mother, but he said someone else...

After I told him that I will call the police,he then said he wouldn't allow me too, left immeditly after I scream HELP right outside. I slammed the door shut and called the police.

I'm sorry if I seem incorernit but this is the first I had this happen to me before ever, at home.

Is this the right place to put this?

You at least need a chain on your door if not a peep hole. Sounds like no force was needed to make him go away. Could have been much worse. Get a pepper sprayer and if that don't work get something more powerful.

That's why a loaded handgun is always with in reach .Good thing you got the door shut and not harmed , keep your doors locked and outside lights on

I'm have a peephole but I sort of know the kid and told his police his name. They then asked "white kid?" They seem to know who he is.

The chain is a good idea and I'll mention that to the staff to, put one on.

Use your wits on people like this who may be under the influence of drugs. You seemed to do it this time. Deadly force is the last resort and you must have a good reason to use same. If you are in a corner that may be the last resort. Bad for both of you.

Unfortunately since I live in HUD Funded apartment managed by a nonprofit Mental Health Ancency that provides my housing and other services. Weapons are not allowed in clients apartments.

The best I can do is kitchen or pocket knife, maybe peppy spray?

Don't let them put a door chain on with little BS half inch long screws that only go into the door trim. The chain anchor screws need to be anchored with at least 3 inch deck screws driven into to door studs.
I prefer 4 inch torx head deck screws.
If they busted through that then they really, really wanted to get shot. There's no possible way anyone is going to be able to sell that as something other than forced entry.

Thanks about reminding me about deadly force is the last resort and must have good reason to use. The way he standing with the door blocking most of my view of his body, he might had one on him. He was riding a bike.

I'm now thinking maybe I should move to where I can have guns, but my rent here is only a third of my income with everything including laundry.

First, good on you. You survived unharmed and did not have to engage the person. You called the authorities setting a paper trail regarding the guy, and you are evaluating how you could do better.

Second, check your state laws, not your landlord's policy. It is entirely possible that their policy is not legal.
See, Doe v. Wilmington Housing Authority et al, No. 1:2010cv00473 - Document 114 (D. Del. 2012), https://law.justia.com/cases/federal/district-courts/delaware/dedce/1:2010cv00473/44289/114/
Several states forbid the landlords from applying such a restriction on rental units, for example Minnesota, https://www.revisor.mn.gov/statutes/cite/624.714, Ohio, if the tenant has a carry permit, http://codes.ohio.gov/orc/2923.126v1

One of the fixes that you can do with your landlord's approval is hardening the entrance to your apartment. Doors can be made more difficult to break in by a few minor changes--https://www.acmelocksmith.com/blog/how-to-reinforce-entry-door/#strengthen-your-home-entry-door and https://www.apartmenttherapy.com/how-to-secure-monitor-your-front-door-193987

I live in Illinois and the is a Mental Health service provider that provides my housing with HUD grants. Due to having Major Depression Disorder, I may have issue getting the State Police to give me a FOID card and getting permission to have a firearm here, would likely be impossible.

Illinois is pretty antigun. You can always keep your garden tools (shovel, hoe, pick axe, scythe- you get the idea) by your door, to keep them from rusting outdoors .
Good luck . stay safe.

The old Army folding shovel does come to mind. Thanks. However we don't a garden here so....

There are some members in Illinois that might know the answer but overall, 1st harden your perimeter, 2nd, have you considered an alarm system. One thing to consider is possibly a taser/stun gun but unaware of Illinois laws regarding those. Pepper spray can work but some folks can fight through it. Kimber sells a pepper spray dispenser that looks like a small handgun that propels the spray under high pressure, it also has dye so as to mark who got hit by it. https://www.kimberamerica.com/pepper-blaster Last but not least, is a cane such as a shillelagh. https://infogalactic.com/info/Shillelagh_(club). As always check with your local and state laws regarding these.

I asked one of the Cops who watches my building at night about tasers, and said I might need a FOID card to even have one. Althrough he also mention that might be changing. However they cost ~$700 to ~$800...

The Kimber pepper spray sounds good. The Blackthorn Cane however I don't have wrong with my knees or legs that I need a walking stick...

Regarding stun gun laws, etc. in Illinois

https://www.criminaldefenselawyer.com/resources/stungun-laws-illinois.htm

Regarding walking canes, the Irish were more or less prevented from having firearms by the British before independence. As a result, the Irish developed a quite sophisticated use of the shillelagh as a substitute. You also find cane/stick provisions by Col. Rex Applegate, Douglas Fairburn, the Philippine stick fighting technique, etc.

It is a way to be armed with something almost 100 percent of the time in plain sight, some also use special umbrellas which can be quite decent themselves as a weapon to fend off an assault. It is also a standoff weapon where one does not have to close with someone to fend them off.

Col Applegate himself was jumped by two critters aiming to rob him and took both out with his walking stick. He was in his seventies at the time.

Well, then there's no reason to leave the tools outside, is there..? ;)

Was this thread started as a Legal question, or a Strategies and Tactics one? I'm not sure what you're asking.

Well I thought would Legal, but now Strategies and Tactics seems to be the proper one.

So hard is to train properly with self defense canes and Shillelaghs?

I have done some with a cane but not formally and in my case, I actually need one due to injuries. The major thing is to ignore movie fighting and find a good martial arts trainer if one can that is not against weapons. Next best, get Rex Applegate's book, Kill or Be Killed and Fairburn's book which title escapes me at the time. There are some videos also floating around of various techniques.

I can’t tell you if you qualify for a FOID card without knowing details that shouldn’t be posted online or shared with someone you don’t know well. Currently you can’t possess a stun gun/taser in Illinois without a valid FOID.

There are many locks made for travelers to use on hotel room doors that you can install without tools or damaging the door or jamb this is the first one that came up on a search:

Travelers Security Lock - Portable Door Lock - Prevent Entry From The Outside - Rest Assured That Our Lock Will Hold Up To The Toughest Of Tests - Works With All Doors Left Or Right Handed -Made in US https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AFN2NKW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_Js3TEb55FMV4A

There are more types to choose from.

I’d recommend OC spray. While it doesn’t work on everyone, it does work on most people and I never had it fail when I used it on duty. The worst part was having to put the subject in the back of my squad car after I sprayed him.

I would make having a way to secure the door my first priority.

It sounds like you handled the situation well.

Did the sprayed perp have a rather strong pepper smell? Did he scream in pain? Sorry to make light of that, but the burnee should be grateful that you didn't shoot him.
