I live in Texas and we moved recently. It's hot and I sweat a lot. I also carry in a front pocket holster. My wife is a cop and sent me a disturbing message: "Before you hear anything on the news, I'm okay." no answer and more disturbingly, nothing on the news.

I'm wandering around the house working myself into a panic and I decide to clean my pocket carry because it always calms me down. I gather the cleaning stuff and pull her out of my pocket. I bought her beat up and used (Bulgarian Makarov, built in 83) but she was my second firearm and she never had a problem. Now she's covered in rust.

Not actually covered but way more than a little sweat should do. I don't know if I left her in my pants pocket and spilled liquid rust on her or what. I start cleaning, the more I clean the less I think about my wife. I can't get the rust out with a cloth and gun cleaner, I'll need to go to the next step. As I'm doing that I'm wondering if I should even carry this pistol anymore. I carry her because she's never had a problem, other than a Ruger P90 not liking Russian surplus none of my pistols have ever had problems. Do I carry her for the sentiment? She was not my first but I care about her more than the first. I even bought two other Maks.

I'm cleaning her thinking that I need to carry a different pistol, maybe the Steyr (9mm) or the Firestar (.40 cal). They both fit in the pocket holster that will be getting replaced soon. They're both more powerful than the Mak, and with less recoil to boot.

The finish on the Firestar is better for protection and a more powerful round than the Mak so that's what I'm going with. 180 gr Black Talon ammo if you're wondering.

I have her all cleaned up and ready to sit in the safe until I'm ready to hit the range (and can afford Mak ammo) but I feel like I'm cheating on her.:(

I hope your wife is ok and you both have a laugh over it later.

As for your pocket carry, if it ain't broke, don't fix it!
If the rust does not impair the function then all you are really doing is cheating on your present one because she doesn't look as good as the newer one. Is that the bottom line? Looks? Or???

You referred to you wife as "a cop" and referred to your gun as "she/her" 15 times.

So I hope the cop is OK, and you got her cleaned up nicely ! :)

Maks really are the best. I sold one (on here) but I'll never get rid of my first makarov. I may be buried with that thing.

I always carry OWB or off the body in the sweaty Texas summer. My ammo failed several times last year when i pocket carried and I learned my lesson. I also switched to a polymer LCR with no regrets.

Hope the better half is OK.

You must have some huge pockets! I carry my mak in an IWB holster. Way to big to fit in any of my pockets. But mine is pretty beat up too. I polish the rust off about every 2 months and put a drop of white out on the front site. I have wanted to refinish it at some point. Might get some Dura-coat and make it look pretty but I'm not sure about the legal issues since the serial # is printed on the frame and any kind of paint would cover it up.

My wife is fine. They did a dynamic entry (SWAT did their thing), shots fired and everything and she knew the reporters were going to report something that would worry me. What she didn't know was that I don't look at the news until she's home just for that reason. Thank ya'll for your thoughts.

I wear Dockers or knockoffs so I can easily put a Mak, Steyr (compact), or Firestar in them without a problem.

I was worried about my Mak getting too rusted and pitted. I'm really rough on clothing, gear, and tools and I didn't want her to take too much damage needlessly. I want to treat her with the respect she deserves.

While some might consider it sacrilege. refinish the gun in a more durable finish. problem solved.

Wax solves a lot of issues with rust, though not too sure how long it will last in a pocket.

Let's see if this gets more traffic in autochuckers...
