*sigh*
Our border is a problem. It is a serious problem.
Even if you are a libertarian, and you believe that people should be able to go work in whatever country they want whenever they want, you still have the problem of National Security.
Here we are, our leaders have told us that we are in a war on terror. We invaded two countries (personally, I have no problems with that, since it was needed in both cases), have subjected ourselves to overzealous searches to get on an airplane and yet we can't do anything about the most obvious problem with our National Security.
I mean, as a photographer, I can't even take photos of many photogenic locations, because there is a bridge, a dam, or some other structure without being harassed. Yet we are unwilling to do anything about the criminals who cross our borders everyday. And yes, they are criminals, they are breaking the laws of the USA when they sneak in.
Osama Bin Laden could cross that border, and make it to the US for crying out loud. It is that open.
The scary thing is that someday we will finally understand the need for border security. The reason I say that it is scary is because we will, as a country, understand that need after we have been attacked, and lose thousands more.
After 9-11, INS cracked down on student visas and expired visas, which is how the 9-11 terrorists got into the country, yet we have done nothing to prevent the same type of terrorists to cross into our country unchecked. Why would they even bother with trying to get a Visa now? Just go down to the border.
The war on terror will never be winnable until our leaders and the public both recognize the threat we are facing with our porous borders, and are willing to do something about it.
