I think if most people saw the model in person and how heavy duty its made, they would change their minds. Plus this is a model, my brother said it cost $175 for all the hardware to make what you see. Then paying for labor and any minor changes that you want to the design.

I can see a price tag of $1,500-2000 if a contractor did it, if you can handle the work it would just be parts cost. If you live near Salem OR and would like a quote... PM me.
 
I've seen that done before, but not in person...

I have seen stairs that had drawers that pulled out, from under the treads... That one has even been on the This Old House show, many years ago...

I've a brother that did something very similar, only his hidey-hole was smaller and intended for a small lockbox with emergency money, a handgun, and ammunition.

No squeeks, loose boards, or anything which said the stairs were anything other than solid stairs.

If I ever get around to building it, I'll post some pics of an Oak console I designed for my car...complete with hidden lockable compartment.
