I am in the market for a good AKM styled rifle. I was looking at the Interarms AK47 with wood furniture ,but they seemed to have dried up. I have started to look at at the Tula Arsenal Marked AK47 at Atlantic Firearms ,but that is as much as I am willing to pay. So dose anyone have suggestions? Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks

Out of everything on Atlantic's website as of today anyways.....I'd stick with one on the Arsenal rifles. True they cost more, but you get what you pay for.

IMHO an AK is an AK, fancying up an AK always brings to mind something about sows ears and silk purses.

I love the AK for what it is, trying to "high quality" it seems counter productive to me.

I've got an Arsenal, sure it looks "better" but at the end of the day it doesn't work any better than my WASR.

Well....you know what they say about opinions I guess....
I had a WASR that I sold because it was a POS compared to my Arsenal.
:neener:

The WASR "is" a good gun for beginners, girls, and people who can't generally shoot though....:D

I have two older Norinco AKM rifles, one fixed and one folder. 1.5mm receiver and very high standard of construction. Well worth it if you can find one.

I recently went the "other" route and built one out of a kit. This is where I came to the realization that while the world view them as "junk" guns, they are actually much more workmanship intensive than I thought. Quite a bit of fitting was required.

I can literally slap an AR together in less than an hour, if I have all the parts. It took two 12 hour days with some equipment that most folks don't normally have to but together my AK.

I will say I do feel quite good about this particular AK in as I know exactly what it took to put together and what parts went in it.

He's the final product minus the finish.

The Zastava PAP M70 rifles are pretty nice, and cheaper than an Arsenal.

I'd leave that as is rather than refinish it. I really like the worn finish look.

I too, will put in a vote for the Zastava's. The ones that are now being sold by Century have addressed the issues that people objected to on the early ones (slant cut receiver, ugly stock).

They a built in the same factory that produced them for the Yugoslav government and are very well built, with a 1.5MM thick receiver.

Here is an early one that I converted.

This is what it looked like when I started:

Highpower where would you get the piece that makes the stock accept ak stocks??

Yugo's take their own unique stock. There is a through bolt that attaches to the receiver. It is very sturdy and there is more than enough of the original style socket left on the early imported Zastava slant cut receivers to hold the buttstock securely in place. I just welded up a filler piece to cover the gap in the bottom. It is held in place by the grip.

Note that from what I can see, on the newly imported guns the rear of the receiver is square and a filler is not needed.

An AR 15 is an AR 15 too even if it's just $600 or $1,500 yet many people buy the expensive ones and scoff and spit at the lower priced ones. I by principle avoid CAI, they aren't that high quality in my experience.

Meaning what?
You do or do not agree that some AR15's are better quality than others?
I mean I can compare a VW bug and a Lamborghini too and just say they are all the same because Volkwagen makes them both and they are just cars....
:D

well said wally, just picked up my amd65 from my dealer which ordered through jg sales. heck this this ak variant im glad i picked up over a saiga/arsenal, at a good price. great finish all matching numbers original chrome lined barrel/receiver.

I have two AK's.

One is a converted Saiga with a side mount and red dot.

I also have a WASR 10/63.

They both have been completely reliable and just as accurate to two hundred yards which is as far as I have to shoot them.

The WASR took a few hours to polish it up, refinish the wood and metal finish.

The Saiga took a few hours to do the pistol grip and magazine/bullet guide conversion.

I got them because I wanted the Saiga as a polymer furniture red dot "updated" AK and the WASR for the "classic" AK.

My neighbor went this route and it took him the past three months to acquire both rifles used and the conversion parts. He was able to get everything for about what an Arsenal would cost after adding shipping and FFL. PA has face to face sales so it cut out a bit of the cost.

Well thanks for the help TurtlePhish. I was thinking something was a little funny. Do you know any good AKMs that are available. Not Arsenal aks but the classic styled ones?

What one pays for and gets is a particular configuration and look. If one wants that it is worth looking at. However, I believe that one can get a much more functional rifle for the money. I love AKs (I own a number of them in various calibers and configurations), but there is a lot of room for improvement. If one is after a purpose built rifle then a saiga is the best base.

If I was merely after the look a wasr will do that. You can even refinish or replace the furniture with nicer wood if one is so inclined. Another option, if one wants something a bit "better" would be a saiga 100 series that will readily take wood front hand guards and 24mm muzzle devices. Move the trigger group and add wood and you'd have what you wanted.
