A good experience coming out of the Cabela's in Glendale, AZ.

I've been on the hunt (informally) for a stainless Sig P232. They're kind of spendy ($858 MSRP), so I pretty much gave up having one for the time being seeing as how when funds get to around $670 or I so usually buy something else.

So I'm at Cabela's goofing around and I see a P232 under the glass priced at $699. Ooooo. But then, I spot a sign near it that reads...

"All new Sig Sauer pistols - $50 off. 20 models to choose from."

Sweet! So I ask to see the pistol. It wasn't but a minute or two before I said, "I'll take it!" We do the paperwork dance and the salesman writes the adjusted price on the designated line; $649. We head for the register. After a short wait the cashier rings me up. Then... disaster! He looks at the paperwork (which says $649 as the price) and back at the register. He asks me why I wrote $649 on it. I tell him that the salesman did it and explained the price tag and the "$50 off" sign. He tells me that the tags usually include those discounts.

Uh-oh. I can almost feel myself starting to pout like a little boy who dropped his ice cream.

The cashier thinks a moment and asks me to wait. I see him talking to the salesman and then get on the phone. After a short period he returns with the manager, a big guy with a country-type niceness/gruffness to him (if that makes sense). The cashier tells him whats going on and the manager says that, in fact, yes, the discount is already included in the tag price and he can't do anything.

Damn it. I'm in full pout now, I just know it. With a sigh and my bottom lip sticking out, I say ok and we complete the sale. I'm not one to argue on these things unless I really feel jilted. This was just a mistake I think. A mistake is a mistake and if I was always held to mine I would probably be broke, jailed, or dead. $699 is still an ok price. I'm a tad dejected at this point, but still, new gun, eh?

So, as most you likely know, Cabela's has that policy where they escort you out with the firearm. As the cashier is escorting me out, the manager catches us as we are walking to the door. This was just about 45 minutes ago so I remember pretty clearly what he said...

"Hey buddy. I went and looked and I don't like how that sign reads in the display case. They usually spell these things out on the tag. So how about I give you $50 gift card to make up for it?"

Sweet, again! I graciously accept, he takes me to Customer Service where he rings up a card, I thank him profusely for making it right, shake his hand, and off I go a happy camper.

All things considered, I think I'm glad it turned out like it did ($699 w/ a $50 gift card) instead of having the $50 off originally. The good feeling I got from the whole experience was worth it!

Today is a good day! :)

The managers name was Mike. Real tall. Very nice guy. I was on my way out and he went out of his way to catch me and make it right. Awesome.

Gratz on the new gun and i'm glad you had a good experience at one of the big chain stores. Good stories about chain stores are getting rarer:)

that is good customer service and its a shame but its rare these days. but it goes to show there still are good honest people out there.

And he knows your coming back. He is also hoping you will buy something over $50. Seems like it worked out great for both of you.

+1 for Cabela's.

And +1.1 for OP, who handled the incident with civility and aplomb.

Great little story.

In the end, you helped them realize their tagging needed some improvement. Great companies pick up on those improvement opportunities.

Amen to that! I've been on both ends of that type of situation, and neither side feels comfortable at the time. When it's handled in such a fine manner by both parties, everyone involved ends up feeling great.

My second to last trip to Cabela's netted me a whole cart full of goodies, which scored me two $50 gift cards as a result of the promotion they were running. I wasn't even aware of the promo! After putting my stuff in the truck, I went right back in and spent the cards on reloading goodies, plus a bit more to boot.

If they ever build one much closer tome, I'm in BIG trouble!

I can definitely vouch for Cabela's being a great store.

I got a cap/T-shirt combo that I got from a friend for Christmas. The cap ended up being too small and the shirt too large. I just put it away, without thinking anything of it since I didn't have a receipt.

Well, about a month ago, someone told me that their return policy was excellent, so I thought I'd give it a try. They accepted it without question and gave me a gift card for the return since I didn't have a receipt. I also left the store in a good mood, after a brief visit to the gun counter of course...

I don't know his name, but I think I know who you're talking about. :) I saw him help out with a lost child, if that is the same guy. The little boy was in near panic mode, but the guy scooped him up in his arms and calmed him right down.

I purchased two of my favorite guns (new S&W M&P, used S&W 3913) from there, using a Cabela's Visa promotion for $100 and $85 off, respectively.

2 months ago Cabelas had 50 rnd boxes of wwb .45 acp fmj on sale for $13.99 by the time I got there they were sold out but hadnt taken the sign down yet. I ask if they have any in back and they say no but the assistant manager of the firearms dept grabs a box of jhp and with my approval marks them to the SAME price:). he then tells that this is to save me the gas of a return trip with a rain check and with the hopes that I continue shopping there. needless to say they then marked the sign sold out no rainchecks. it seems that the goodwill of a customer is worth a few dollars to some stores;)

You should write Cabelas a letter (you may have already.) Too many times we are quick to "complain" when someone makes a mistake. You however, handled it extremely well. Let them know when one of their employees goes that extra mile!

Sounds like they made it right! That's good to hear.

Did they have their "Take a number" Wheel working? Last time I was there they had the wheel but no numbers for it. One of the workers said it had been empty for 2 months, which is when it was installed. You have to go during the week or first thing on weekend mornings to get help. Nothing like standing at the counter with 50 people looking for help without any organization. When I go there I'm usually looking to buy since I live 60 miles away.

ill second the writing of a letter, its too easy to complain but the situation was handled in a satisfactory manner that deserves to be recognized

Cabelas,Very nice store.. Just purchase a 586 in 8/38 " from them.. Glad to hear of your positive experience.. One way they could improve would be to match competitors prices when shopping online!!! Not sure why they won't do it...

I do plan to write a letter. I was very pleased with the experience, especially given that this is a big chain store.

I've never lived cclose enough to a Cabellas to be in one,but I can vouch for their telephone and internet customer service being excellent.

Write a letter. Customer service/management gets about 1000 complaints for every bit of praise. Remember the old saying about "One ahs**t wipes out 1000 attaboys?" Well it works the other way around, too.

Oh man, ive been looking for a P232 Stainless with houge grips and night sights myself.. I qualify for a federal officer discount from Sig Sauer, and factory direct for this is $609 but theres a huge waiting time. A friend of mine is an FFL, and he can't seem to find one much cheaper than $609..

Thats a pretty good deal for that.. Congrats (insane jealousy)

Great PR but I think they can afford it.

About 5 or so years ago when the Cabela's in Dundee, Mich. was just opening I went up on the final "opening weekend". Actually they had been opened since Labor Day weekend 10 days before. In small talk with the cashier when checking out I ask how many people came through the "opening 3 day event". The answer was not mind blowing at 140,000 but the per person sale of $600.00 was. If you do the math that's 84 MILLION DOLLARS!! in 3 days.
