Cause my mind thinks too much probally, and usually I think "better to have it and not need it, then need it and not have it".
A look at two rifles.

Well, just like you can't have a high performance car that also gets good gas mileage, a rifle that will deliver at extremely long distance isn't going to work well when pressed to serve duty at very short ranges.
1,000 yards is a pretty long distance. You can't learn how to shoot that far from a book, the internet, or video games. Even if Mars and Jupiter align and you find that for some reason you both need it and have it, unless you've actually shot those longer distances and got good dope for your rifle, you won't make any hits with it.
But hey, at least the Facebook pictures will look cool, right?

For that kind of shooting, or even anything much beyond 300 yards, if you ain't practicing religiously you don't have it.
And if you can't even find a range within fifty miles to shoot that far, you're also not likely to need it.
For example... I want a 1895 Marlin Guide Gun in 45-70. It would be the ideal tool for stopping any big critter that wanted to eat me in its tracks. But I live in PA. The meanest thing we have here are black bears, and although they've had several chances to eat me, I've found them to be not nearly as mean as advertised. Hence, I don't need the field artillery stopping power of a hot .45-70.

The problem with all this SHTF stuff is that there is no such thing as one and only one scenario.
City is different from country, and suburban is different from either. So where one lives plays a large part in the decision-making process.
Stay in one spot? Bug out? If a bug-out, is it a pickup truck or a motor home? And on and on. Solo operation? Family, only? Family within group?
IOW, IMO, the opening post is meaningless. No scenario probabilities.
But typical. Absence of forethought...
