After a long long story I ended up having a very small collection of guns that needs some filling in. So far I've managed to not buy this and that because it's cheap or cool and I would like to just buy a handful of working guns and then finaly pick something to collect and not just any old gun that catches my eye.
On the pistol front I feel I'm mostly finished. I have a kel-tec p-32 (bug), a 2" taurus 445 44 spec(ccw), a 4" taurus 441 44 special(ccw and woods gun), and a dan wesson 8" 44 mag(hunting and house). I'll add a 22 lr 4" 941 or a DW 22 in the future and maybe a T/C contender.
Long guns is a different story I have a 22 rifle that I need to fix, an m-1 carbine, and a H&R 12 bore single. I would like to get a set of guns that can cover most of my hunting and defesive needs that work on a similar platform.
some Ideas I've had have been a rem 870 12 bore, a rem 760 in 30-06 or 280, and a rem pump 22 lr. Another possiblilty is a 22 lr AK, a siaga 308 and a siaga 12 bore. This leaves out some of the cartriges I realy like( 257 kimber, 338-06, and 358 hawk) but I want to hold my working guns to a minimum to cover whitetail deer, black bear maybe ND elk, small game and a little upland bird hunting plus home defence.

The floor is open for all coments and rubarbs.

I have one handgun, CZ75 PO1, one rifle, Mosin Nagant M38, and one shotgun, Winchester 1200. Don't forget the wide variety of Curio and Rlic guns that can give fantastic service at bargain basement prices.
I do suggest a pump shotgun of some kind, and switchable barrels to go from field to home defense, such as a Mossberg 500 series. Basic works very well here.
A semi auto rifle? Saiga 308 is a good choice, especially since EAA is now importing 20 round mags, and maybe someone else will make one cheaper. Also, don't discount the SKS for inexpensive close encounters weapon.
Good bolt actions are everywhere, from the moderately expensive, like your Remington, to the cheap yet incredibly effective, like my Mosin. Buy what tickles your fancy!
"bore"? Are you English, by chance?

Collection Of Arms:

Working Guns:

a) Sig-Sauer P220A .45 ACP
b) Smith & Wesson (old model) 60 .38 Special
c) Remington 12 gague 870 Marine Magnum

Cool Guns:

a) Sig-Sauer P228 9m/m
b) Smith & Wesson 629-5 5" Classic .44 Magnum
c) Smith & Wesson 686-5 6" DCM .357 Magnum
d) Walther PPK .380 ACP
e) NAA "Mini" 1-1/8" barrel .22 Magnum
f) Springfield WW-II G.I. Mil Spec .45 ACP
g) Smith & Wesson model 30 2" barrel .32 S&W Long

Uh Oh! I have more "Cool Guns" than "Working Guns"!

Best Wishes,
Ala Dan, N.R.A. Life Member

I consider a "reasonable battery of guns" to be at least one more gun that I already have :)

My suggestion for a minimum of long guns is

* a 22 LR rifle
* a 12 ga shotgun (pump or auto)
* a 30-06 rifle (for hunting just about any big game animal in NA)
* a SHTF gun (AK, AR, SKS, FN etc)

and handguns
* a 22 LR auto or revolver
* a big bore revolver (357, 44, 45, etc)

Sorry - no neat bullet points - just a list! I cheated here because this list was made up for another thread where comments were invited on each gun .... so various entries made against each because of that.! It also includes a few entries relevant to a few guns owned in past but no longer with me.

Much of this lot is pure indulgence (Investment Honey!!) ....... to anyone else - get what you can and enjoy ... I know darned well I could ''manage'' with just maybe three or four (the ''guilt'' aspect!) .....

The .338 of course would be excellent for black beard and elk, but the 30-06 should be perfectly adequate and it's not as much overkill for deer. As an "everything in North America" rifle, a 30-06 should cover it. The 760 is a fine choice...

Of course you need a .22 rifle, and I love the Remingtons, the 572 pump or 552 semi-auto. I also don't think you can go wrong with a Ruger 10/22. However, it's a little short, and my 552 feels a lot better to me. The tube magazine may also be an issue to consider. If you don't want to have to worry about keeping up with magazines, the 572 or 552 would be great...

I think the Remington 870 in 12Ga will cover anything else.

Some here will probably have an alternative to the 30-06 for an "everything gun", 45-70 or something. I don't have any experience with many other big bores, so remember what you paid for my opinion. :)
Good Luck
RT

P.S. Get an M1 Garand. The M1 carbine needs a big brother. Just 'cause.

s&w 24

Hmmm - I'd suggest a pre-Garcia Sako in 30-06 instead of the Remington just 'cause I think the Sako is just too gorgeous, but a BRNO would do quite well and be more economical. I think I can understand the 'single platform' concept - but I guess I tend to enjoy some diversity (could it be because of my life's style - or that I'm blonde? who knows. . .).

Yep, an 870 12ga is the right way to go (every home should have one), though I have a fondness for my Fabarms FP6.

I'd suggest a lever action carbine in .44mag (terrific on deer in brush) - or go for a Guide Gun.

My Winchester 9422 is a sweetheart, and the old minty ones are perfection itself - and far less expensive than a comparable pump in .22

Considering I'm in the high mountains and it's pretty flat out where you live, what about one splurge? A Sharps in 45-70 would see a good workout, be a heart-stopper hanging over the fireplace; oh the reasons are endless, but it's just forwarded as food for thought.

I agree with Red Tornado - that carbine needs a big brother. . .

But if you have your heart set on the 'single platform' then you've got things simple and have an easy order.

Trisha

Don't let these guys with big collections intimidate you. We all have our different definitions of a 'reasonable' collection.

I agree with you--you have a reasonable pistol collection.

With regards to long arms, you are on the right track.

An 870 is a prime candidate for "best all around" shotgun.

And a .30-06 or anything in that class (6.5X55 up to .45-70) is a prime candiate for best all around rifle. 6.5X55 is getting small for Elk, and .45-70 is big for Coyote and other varmits.

And you need a .22 rifle, of course. Its mandatory.

Next step may be an intermediate rifle for mid-range/midsize/home defense use. Often thats an AR. Or a "varmit rifle" in .223 or some other cartridge in that class.

And if you plan to hunt upland game, a double-barreled shotgun has a slight edge over the 870. You have 2 different chokes to work with. And you can put in 2 different loads. I often go afield with a 'dove load' in one barrel and a 'partridge load' in the other.

thanks for the input people. I will have a M-1 rifle but it's not hi on the list at the moment. I wanted to go with a 44 mag lever but If I can keep it simple with having similar action types I will. I may go back to a set of 1903 sporters for my hunting rifles and just have a differing SLR action type unless some one has a pederson device they have been saving for me  .

so it would go something like this

03 sporter in 358 hawk or 375 hawk
03 sporter in 6.5-06
1922 22 lr or hornet sporter

then a SLR to top it off.

Well, here it is:

Ruger P89
Mossberg Maverick 88 12ga
Marlin 60 .22 lr

thats it... i've only been at this hoby for a few months, and i'm trying to pay for college too :cuss: , but come christmas time there's gonna be a CZ97 added onto that list!!! :D

Hmmm...suggestions....I'd say:

A good .30-06 bolt. I'd suggest a Remington 700.
Good .22 sixgun. Say an S&W model 18.

Since everyone is posting their collections, I'll put mine in here:

Ithaca M49 single-shot .22 lever
J.C. Higgins M20 12 gauge pump

Another approach to consider:

When my boys were small, I decided that I would teach them gun safety with every type of action they might run into in the real world, and developed my collection around that concept. They are early 20's now, and it worked. My collection grew (honey, its for the kids!!) and so did their firearms expertise. They are both excellent shots, very safety minded, and my younger son just got a deer yesterday!

Of course, there are variations on everything, and I certainly don't have them all, but you can see what I tried to accomplish. Somewhere along the line I got interested in S&W revolvers and picked up a few of those. Still don't have a single action revolver of any type. I think they can figure that one out, though, along with the falling block rifles, semi-auto shotguns, etc.

For the obligatory .22 rifle, the ruger is good, but don't overlook the very good CZ bolt guns. Can't go wrong there. Who said "Only accurate rifles are interesting"?

Most of all, have fun! It takes a long time for most of us to build up a collection, but think where you'll be in 20 years if you just get one per year.

I also suggest investing in a good safe - that was for the kids, too.

RBH

I agree on the big collection.
I used to want A WHOLE LOT of guns and I still want more than I have and more than I can afford, but I am progressing to the point that a few good, simple guns are really what I want.

For mine:

Finn M-39
CZ-452
4" .357 (GP-100)
9mm auto (probably SIG)
Kel-tec P-32 or P3AT for carry when you can't carry
Browning BPS Stalker 12 gauge w/ barrel cut to 18.5" and rifle sights installed
Marlin 1894 .357 mag
AK or SKS

I don't have them all yet but I am thinking that I will be pretty well set after I get to that point. I like to shoot and I like guns as much as the next guy, but the newest thing doesn't necessarily interest me any. Most sporting guns bore me so they are kept to a minimum. I like to shoot more than I like to hunt or impress people, so that is how I choose my guns.
I also have an SMLE, an H&R .410, and a 10/22 that I will always have because my dad gave them to me. I might maybe add a M99 Savage (one of the very few sporting guns that I like) and maybe one of the AIA Enfields when they become available, but that is probably about it for me.
Some guys like to collect and that is cool with me. Some guys like blasting clay pigeons with their $18,000 over and unders and that is cool with me.
As for my collection, I just want simple guns that will stand up to all the rounds I can shoot through them.

I'm one of those people who doesn't hunt but still buys firearms. Damn I enjoy shooting.

Yugo/Egyptian M48 Mauser - Beautiful condition. Made by Yugoslavia for Egypt, Egypt renegged on the contract and the lot of them sat in a storehouse in the Balkans until the late 90's. Shoots like a dream and 8mm is perfectly priced.

Mosin Nagant 91/30 - Such a well made gun, shoots like a beast and'll give you a nice blue shoulder. A man's gun.

H&R M1 Garand - The Grand Garand. Bought it at CMP because I had the chance and it turned into one of my favorites fast. Can't shoot this rifle too much --There is no such thing as a firearms collection without an M1 Garand.

Romanian WASR 10- Comrade Kalashnikov made a fine, remarkable rifle and I admire them continuously. The Romanian shoots even better with good care, and this one is keeping the spot warm for the Russian model I am searching for.

Romanian CUR 2 AK 74 - Came in before the import ban and is 100% Romanian mil-spec. I wasn't too sure about the 5.45x39 cartridge but it won me over quickly. Once I got a 74 I'll never just have a 47 ever again.

Spanish CETME (CAI) - CAI is always suspect but I have had very good luck with my CETME. It shoots good groups and is well made. Once you get inside your CETME you can really see how it was the first of the later HK G3's, MP5's...ect ect.

Armalite AR180B - Bought it after I read the list of all of the rifles banned in California (literally - from a threat on THR) and I decided to exercise my rights. Very pleased with the combination of the AR design with the FAL design and shoots as well as both of those. A real gem running under too many shooters radar.

***Hopeful*** ****Potential****

Tommarow I will find out if I'll be getting the chance to buy a Nornico 86S bullpup.

In the future - Steyr AUG/USR. The dream gun.

I have lotsa gunz!

but when you talk about a reasonable battey, I think of bare bones minimum. to me, that would be:

A good, accurate .22LR target pistol

A good defense pistol, like a Sig 226 or Glock 17 in 9MM

A good rifle, like an AR-15 or Galil .223

Those three would cover just about every situation you might encounter. :)

Of course, if possible there about 75-80 more that would be nice to have.

Boy, my list is much shorter than most of 'em but here goes:

-S&W Model 64 4" .38 Police Trade
-S&W Model 642 1.78" .38 (Thanks Ala Dan)

-Mosin Nagant 91/30
-Yugo SKS
-Yugo Mauser M48
-Swiss Schmidt-Rubin K31
-Remington 20 Ga. 870 Wingmaster (gift from fiancee's father - man how easy that made it to move to AL from MD where I'd spent all my life! :) oh yeah the lady of my life helped somewhat!)

I kinda want a Springfield Mil-Spec GI .45 next - guess I'll be back at Simmons SG in Bessemer to see Ala Dan again! (that one might have to wait till I find a job - bless God for the insane Maryland Real Estate Market for my current stature of taking my time looking for employment!)

BARE BONES (Severely financially or legally restricted)

S&W 686 or Ruger GP100
Remington 870 12ga
308/30-06 bolt rifle

Reasonable minimum
above list PLUS
Ruger 10/22
9mm or 45 Auto
.380/32 Auto or 38 snubby
7.62x39 or .223 magazine fed Semi-auto

Doing pretty good but not overstocked
All of the above PLUS
Buckmark or Ruger MK II or 22/45
44 Mag revolver
.223 or .243 bolt/single shot rifle

You gotta get a S&W model 24 or you'll have to change your name!

S&W 24 was second choice(first was S&W 27) in names a long time ago but S&W 24's are quickly becoming my favorite over other N-frame S&W's.

Good solid suggestions from one and all. I also came across the EAA bounty hunter dbl bbl shotguns and they have barrel liners in 222,223,308,30-06 and ( hold that wagon) 45-70. how practical would it be to get an EAA dbl 12 and a couple of liners? you could switch to a non factory cartrige if it had the same case head as another cartrige by haveing a good gunsmith turn and thread a bbl blank to use the same extractors and adapters that hold the rifle bbl's in. The only thing missing would be an optic mount IF the thing could group well. Any thoughts on this idea ?

P.S. I've located a 3" 624 that I'll pick up after my longgun dillema is solved.

iamkris summed up most of my basics pretty well.

Here's how I would plan it:

Handguns:
Practice & Hunting:

.22lr: Ruger Mk II, stainless
Hunting:
- .357mag or .44mag revolver, scoped, stainless.
Defensive:
- 9mm: Browning High Power, or other relaible high capacity pistol, plus 3-5 proven magazines. S&W 3913 is actually pretty good, used for $300.
- .45 ACP: Sig 220 or reliable 1911, plus 6-10 proven magazines.
- .38spcl or 44spcl revolver, concealable.

Long Arms:
- Ruger 10/22 or Remington Speedmaster 552.
- 12 gauge Remington 870, with magazine extension and extra barrel (short with rifle sights). With a selection of shot and slugs, this would be very versatile.
- AKM (stamped receiver AK-47) like the SAR-1 (7.62x39), OR an AR-15 (.223) with 16" light barrel. Either of these would make a handy carbine.
- FAL (7.62 NATO): With a 20 round magazine, stop any North American animal, or almost any vehicle. Turn 7.62x39 or .223 cover into simple concealment.
- Remington 700 Police in .308, scoped and accurized. When reaching out with accuracy & power, or taking advantage of an egg sized target at 100 yards is what you need to end the fight or bring home the bacon.

Any of the long arms could be pressed into service for hunting, but the .22's would be the game getters. The advantage of the rifle calibers listed is that ammunition is available in bulk so it is affordable, and will probably be around for a long time.

After that there's lots of room for specialty calibers and tools.

Richardson

s&w 24 - your idea with the barrel liners and custom work does sound kind of cool, but I am thinking that it may be more practical to just get a couple different guns to cover what you need them to do and let it go at that.
Also, what if something happens to that one gun with all the adapters? If that is the only gun you have, you don't have any guns anymore. At least if you have a couple guns, you still have something until you get your primary gun fixed.

And while we are on the subject, part of the fun in shooting is shooting different guns. I would get bored if I only had one gun to shoot all the time.

Just my opinion.

GOON-- I was thinking the same thing but it sounded like a cool way to cover my long gun needs so I can start collecting something in particular.

after some trading with S&W the senior and selling a few it's shaping up like this

18" bbl 870 with 28" poly choke spare bbl
20" bbl 870 with speedfeed stock, side saddle, and 3 shot ext.
rem 721 in 30 gibbs (free dougnut if you know what that is) and a 308 win bbl in the mail for it
M-1 carbine
moss 22lr self loading rifle
moss 22lr target bolt action rifle

will be adding a NEF rifle,a rem in 257 rob,an O/U 12 bore, and a old model ruger 44 carbine
and way down the line I'll have the 30 gibbs rebored to 358 or 375 hawk.

some will notice that there is no hi-cap SLR (AK,G-3 etc)after re-reading some Jeff Cooper
and chatting to glamdring on the subject I'm not seeing a big need for one in the hunting fields or as a homeland defence rifle. I'm not poo-pooing them as a class I'm just saying they don't fall into any realistic working catagorys for me but if you know otherwise please let me know.

In the handgun dept. out with the p-32 and in with well I'm not shure for a BUG I'll come up with something (Saw a nice first model AMT back-up at the last show and a beater colt 1903)

I have only 4 firearms:

1. Remington 870 Magnum 12 Gauge
2. Ruger 10/22 carbine
3. Glock 20c
4. Remington 700 BDL .300 Ultra Mag rifle

These work for me.
