I am determining whether i should trade the sigma in 9mm from smith and wesson for my .45 colt defender? I was wondering which one is better when it comes to performance, reliability, etc. I like both of them but when i saw the sigma recently i liked it alot. Any personal expriences would be really helpful. Thanx.

I haven't shot the Defender, but the Sigma is an extremely ergonomic and reliable service pistol with a very long, heavy, consistent trigger pull. I carry mine and am very satisfied with it.

Make sure

Make sure the Sigma you're getting is the recent generation of them (3rd gen, I think?) The earlier Sigmas have bad reps. I've seen many a thread dealing with that issue. My 40 Sigma is recent manufacture and I have had almost no trouble with it. A few light primer strikes, but that was on ammunition that seemed to be iffy. Only one FTF on a winchester case primer, and I think that was due to an out of battery trigger pull. It was the second box of ammo I used, so I can't really recall the exact details, but the thing absolutely loves CCI. The heavy trigger pull is terrible for range shooting, but between my M&P and my Sigma, I'd probably rather every-day carry the Sigma. Keep it chambered and I doubt, short of a bad holster or unsafe grip, the thing will go off.

I have both and like them both. However I think you are comparing apples and oranges as they serve different niches. The Defender is meant to be a small CCW weapon. The Sigma a full size duty weapon. The Colt Defender by the way is worth much more money, so don't make an even trade.

I would keep both.

A Sigma for a Colt?

Ya guy got any Porsches you want to trade for a Yugo too?

EDIT:I'm not bashing the Sigma, but from a pure dollar position, the Sigma is worth less than half what the Colt is worth.

If you really like the Sigma and don't care for the Colt, sell the colt and buy the Sigma, a pile of mags and a case of ammo.

I've had a chance to put several mags worth of ammo through a Sigma. Was not impressed...especially w/ the trigger. I would go w/ the Defender every time ;)

I own a Defender and love it. Shot my brother's Sigma (old version) and hated it.

Of course, YMMV.

My sigma is one of the most reliable weapons I own..oddly LOL I removed the "extra" trigger springs and made the trigger pull not as stupid as it was.

but you are comparing 2 guns in 2 totally different price ranges :D

Ahhh, Defenders! (http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=235488)

First, it's a .45.

Second, it's a hand-melt. I have big hands and short fingers, and the thing fits perfectly. Easy to hang onto. Guys with much bigger paws have shot it and it works for them, too.

Third, it is more accurate than you are. No insult intended, but at 25 feet it shoots from a rest into one messy hole, about the size of a 10-ring. I can't do that offhand. :D

Fourth, it is plain beautiful.

Fifth, it will probably wind up being worth more than you pay for it.

Sixth, it will steal your soul. Because mine has driven me slightly insaner than I started (getting it to eat JHPs, etc.), but I doubt that I could ever let it go. Unless I got the right offer ... :D :(
(It's in the other room. It didn't hear me.)

Keep the Defender!

Classic design...sleek and concealable.

In a world gone ga-ga over guns made of plastic, built like a brick with terrible triggers, I couldn't imagine getting rid of a COLT!
