A slightly different take on Situational Awareness.

Situational Awareness is the ability to identify, process, and comprehend the critical information about an incident.
It needn't be an incident. I first learned the term in the cockpit of an airplane. It was all about preventing an incident. It involved 3 axis of movement (both of my airplane and others), sounds of the engine, wind noise, a dozen panel indicators, my exact position along a planned course, a precision approach to successfully terminate the flight.
It still governs the way I drive, walk, bike, boat, etc.

When I dine out, my choice of locale and restaurant somewhat relieves me of such highly tuned senses.

At home, my cameras, my dog and my neighbors relieve me if even more

As Jeff White said, man cannot live at heightened states for the majority of his days. I make it count.

Just pay attention. Avoid the bad demographics. Don't let anyone get in your personal space.

How can one do that?

You're not going to like me saying this but if I don't know you I'm not going to let you back me into a corner. And within reason I'm not going to let you approach within a certain distance of me.

Now before you try to prove you're the smartest guy in the room, I'm not talking about walking through Walmart or a Mall (wear I wouldn't be anyway) in a crowd where people are going to be close to you whether you want them to or not.

I'm talking specifically about somebody I don't know approaching me at a gas station or in a parking lot where they really don't have any business approaching me.

A normal person, especially in this era of social distancing, would not try to continue to close distance on you after you asked them not to.

The question remains, how would you prevent it?

The correct answer has already been given: you would move away.

But you already pointed out that's not always possible.

I've only ever had one person ignore me after I asked him not to approach me. I bladed on him, raised my off hand and told him "I'm not going to ask you again, STOP."

He decided to go elsewhere.
