After you announce that you made your decision to buy just one more, what is your response to this type of question?
Mine was about possible use by Brit./Aussie troops in Burma or Malaysia ("isn't that neat?").

My latest purchase rationale (first black rifle) offered to the domestic admiral was..."I don't know, just because I can...for the hell of it". Couldn't really tie it to my main interests with hunting. It actually worked. Guess she appreciated the honesty.

I stopped making excuses. I just tell her its spending money, and its how I chose to spend it. When you start justifying them, then you are playing a logic game with someone who doesnt share your logic and thinks your illogical from the start for even wanting it.

I once came home from a gun show with a Taurus .357 Magnum with 4" barrel. I told her what I bought, and she said something along the lines of, "Don't you already have a .357?" And she was right - I had a snubbie Taurus .357 and Marlin 1894 chambered in .357. The way she said it implied she didn't care if I bought a caliber I didn't already have, but I shouldn't be replicating calibers.
:neener:

I recently bought a S&W M&P 15A, with the agreement I would buy her a new digital camera. I think I came out ahead in the deal ... and I still haven't bought her the camera! :D

...at least not yet

Explain it as a investment. Which, well it is. Point out what the gun collection is worth now vs one year ago, then compare to the 401k

I justify my purchases (guns, fishing gear, tools) to no-one other than myself. I don't question my wife when she buys clothes or shoes or goes to lunch with her friends. I plant the plants and bushes she buys. I don't go overboard and neither does she. I have bought things for my boat and then not purchased a gun and vice versa. If you can still pay your bills and other obligations, what difference does it make?

If my wife wants a $400 pair of shoes and I want a $500 gun and we both get what we want, do I owe my wife $50 or $100? In our house, no, everything does not have to be financially equal, is some households it does.

Ah, how i love the single life!

/If you lock your girl in the trunk of your car for two hours, and/or you lock your dog in the trunk of your car for two hours, who will be happy when you get back?

We have agreed on a monthly allowance I can spend on guns and gun related accessories. Basically receipts from Midway or the local toy store are counted. No questions asked as long as I keep it within the agreed range or close to. She doesn't want to know what it's for and I don't want to explain why. It's usually just 'cause it's so cool!' or 'it makes me happy'. 'I need it', ha, ha, that's laughable.

"So what is different about THIS gun?"

Nothing - this gun has always been in the back of the safe, honey.

Personally, I solve the problem by not getting hitched. I can buy all the guns I want, leave cosmoline-encrusted parts kits lying around on the floor, and use any of Oleg's photos for a background image on my computer.

Only person that ever asked me that was my mother, but she golfs so i put it in terms of golf clubs.

You can drive a ball with a wood or an iron, but you pick the one that is most appropriate to the exact shot you're looking to make. She has however many clubs, i have however many guns.

my girlfriend is ex-airforce , so shes pro gun . when i buy a new gun , i tell her that i save my money to buy what i think will make me happy and in turn i will make her happy when we go to bed.

H2O MAN,
You must not be married, that remark would be instantly interpreted as: "before THAT gun, she was not sexy or thin", bad ju ju man. I've been there and it's not a happy place to be.

Whats different about THAT gun?
then i ramble on technical specs untill she walks away rolling her eyes

If she doesn't know the difference then you're home free. Just buy them and tell her it's the same one she's seen before.

If the scene in Croc. Dundee 2 had not been on last week-where he shoots out the tires of the criminals' trucks (though his standard LE was sporterized)-my fever for an LE "Jungle Carbine" might not have developed. Have only seen one JC, and it was over a year ago (never quite forgot it).

I just told my wife about some of your responses, i.e. purses and shoes, and she said "But I don't have that many, and then I give some of them away".

When told last August that a second MN 44 ($130) was needed as a spare, she looked like a tranquilizer dart from a native blowgun had hit her.. stunned and baffled.
My comment was that guns and ammo can be resold at somewhere near the original cost if we are patient, but not so with purses and shoes.

I mention to my wife occasionally that I use the money I used to spend on women to fill my spare time with a constructive hobby instead of chasing skirts. She has yet to come up with a comeback to that in 7 years! :D
