I own a couple AR10s and an Ar 15, all in the A2 configuration (because I like em that way), my Armalite AR10A2 promises an 1.5 MOA, I know you can get the adpater to fit into the handle for a scope mount, but I have never mounted optics on one of these. how difficult is it to get good results when your scope will sit so high? I figure the slight recoil would loosen the mount adapter on the handle, any input on this or should I just go with a flat top/picatinney configured rifle and buy another :)

Tex, trust me, it's a major pain in the rear scoping the handle. You damn near break your neck to reach the scope, it's about as UN-natural as it gets.

There's yer excuse to get another rifle :D

Edit: OR you can get one of the removable handles that fit to your Pic and when you want to scope it, just pop off the handle and pop on your scope. Quick release mounts with zero return are great for this. But I still say get another rifle cuzz I KNOW you are lookin fer an excuse :D

mine are extremely consistent sub moa shooters, and i actually find it very comfortable and have for many years.

even my flat top colt ended up with a scope on top of the carry handle.

FlyinBryan, you must have one of them long heads with a chicken neck then. Old Fat guys like Tex and I would break our necks trying to bring them to bear. (Shhhh Bryan, he is looking for an excuse to get another rifle trust me :D )

I think he means an A3 removable handle, same as my Colt MT6400.

I've had good success with scoping the handle on more than 1 A2. My AR308 is A2. I use the scope exclusively on it. Be sure to loctite the mounting screw that goes through the handle. The mount needs to be a tight fit in the sight channel, and use the lowest rings you can possibly mount the scope with and it still clear everything. It's not that hard to get to the scope as long as you have the rifle stock or the ACE skeleton stock like my 308. I've never tried one with the telescoping stock so I don't know about it.

yep, except in my case a mt6700c

my preferences for optics on that rifle is the reason i went with the a2 variety uppers on the next two ar15's that i purchased. i tried probably a dozen different risers and rings for the mt6700c and always wound up going back to the mount on the (removable) carry handle that came with the rifle.

(the mt6700c is a model of the colt match target rifle, the "c" indicates that it was equipped with a compensator. i bought the rifle new for $899 back in about 1995-1996)

I got a spare Armalite AR10A2 I want to mount a scope on, aint decide whether a red dot, a low power or 3x9x50 or even a fixed power. all I know it would come in handy for all the hogs I got. I had to take a shot at a hog at almost point blank range that ran by me a few nights ago, open sight/optics would have been a plus.

Tex, for the applications you use that most for, I would go with the 3-9x50. Great field of view on the low power 3 for those close in running shots, and if you spot one out by your cow feeder you can crank it up and "pick a hair" to shoot. I'm assuming you are talking about your AR10 in .308.

I just put a scope on my A2. Honestly, it is nowhere near as awkward as I thought it would be. Granted you have more of a jaw weld than a cheek weld on the stock, but it isn't bad.

Speaking of, does anyone have a good suggestion on a cheek riser for this setup? I do not want one of those cheap plastic ones. A bag of some sort would be much better...

A great set up is only as good as the base/mount, steer clear of the cheap carry handle mounts and get a leupold mount and use loc-tite as well. I have ran a leupy base, rings, and VXII 2-7 scope for a while now as my Yote gun and it has held zero just fine:D

If you want to mount a red dot sight, you could get one of those co-witness mounts that attaches to the carry handle and gives you a rail section cantilevered out in front of the handle that you attach the sight to... it co-witnesses with the irons. That only works with a non-magnified red dot though. That is what I would do if I had an A2 that I wanted optics on... actually I would sell it and buy a flat-top, but I take it that isn't what you want to do. ;)
