I have been a member of the AARP for several years, and it's time to renew my membership. One of my peers said he refused to join them due to their anti-gun stance. What is their position? I'm not involved in any of their insurance programs, and any discounts available through them are usually available through my AAA membership. I'm not willing to continue funding them if they are anti-gun extremists. What would you do?

Gun Control
AARP believes in the Constitutional right to bear arms. But to make the nation safer, we must do what we can to keep guns out of hands of children and criminals. AARP supported the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act, which went into law in 1994 with bi-partisan support, but was allowed to expire this year.

AARP supports measures to eliminate firearm possession by juveniles, convicted domestic abusers and those under domestic violence restraining orders.

So, they are in support of the Assault Weapons Ban, but they're calling it a different name.

I wonder if they've updated that position in the last 4 years.

I found the same policy, but the site is full of broken links and is not terribly functional.

It sounds good, but by supporting the Brady Bill, they lost my membership. I'm going to tell them that.

The Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act isn't the Assault Weapons Ban by a different name.

I was a member 25 years ago. At that time an anti-gun article appeared in their publication and this was before the Brady bunch. I wrote them to complain and resigned my membership. I haven't received a scrap of mail from them since.

AARP has supported the Brady Campaign for years. I'll never join.

Yep.

I need to start returning their postage-paid solicitations with some of my dog's recycled dinner.

Thanks for the reminder. :)

And I'll second Pure Customs' sentiments..............I haven't,and WON'T join ANY organization, regardless of purported benefit packages, that seek to limit my rights............add to the AARP Levi jeans, as well..............told my wife a couple of years ago to either take back the present or trash it!...............Unfortunately THR precludes me saying what I really think!!!!

I sent them a note telling them that I would not join their group because of their radical anti-gun stance. I also told them to take my name off of any of their mailing lists.

There is a alternative to AARP and it is more of a conservative based group. I dont remember the name of it but it was discussed on a few of the nationwide talk shows withen the last 2 years....

Don't toss it. Mail back to them blank in their post paid envelope.
Put some lead sinkers or wheel weights in it first, or tape it to a brick.

I got a car insurance quote from "their" company (Hartford) and it was outrageously high anyway. I stuck with ... AIG. :uhoh:;)

I have always preferred Pro American organizations, not socialist ones.

I always send any AARP stuff back to the AARP with nothing in it or on it. Have been doing that for years.

I am a life member of the NRA and the DAV.

Go figure.

Fred

AARP is simply a political action committee for the insurance industry. They use retired people as their front group because they will go along with most anything to get a discount.

I put the things I get from the NRA (trash mail) in those prepaid envelopes from AARP and other mailings that annoy me. I would love to be there when they open their mail.
