Accuracy issues in my snub- maybe the crown?

Have you checked the timing? Even with a damaged crown, it shouldn’t shoot that badly.

Crown looks fine. As others said, maybe a timing issue.

But yeah, try different ammo first.

What size grips are you using? Can you show us a picture of them?

It's a SP101. I stored it improperly at one time and loose metal had the opportunity to bang into it, the frame is a bit scratched and that's why I'm eyeing crown damage as a possibility.

I had a similar problem with my LCRx357...it was all over the target. I thought it was a front sight problem. Turns out it was crown damage. You can see the crown damage in the attached pic. I sent it back to Ruger and they installed a new barrel insert. Shoots straight and true now. I suggest you give Ruger CS a call.

8 inches at 7 yards is terrible. Like, when I took a friend shooting, something he doesn't do often, his first 5 shots were maybe a 6 inch group. Inexperience will do that, but you don't seem to be unfamiliar to shooting.

There could be multiple things at play here. One is the SP101 is not the most accurate revolver ever made and has terrible ergonomics. I have a Rock Island .38 snub that was consistently pulling to the left with the wood grips and I thought it was the crown too, but then I switched to the larger plastic grips and it shot to POA.

But before we condemn the ergos on the SP, as others have suggested, try different ammo. This SP you have may not like wadcutters or it may not like lead bullets at all.

Throat size is important and Ruger seems to love making them big these days. If you have a set of calipers, measure your throats. You could also have a bad alignment of the chamber and bore. You could also have a bad barrel with improper groove/land dimensions.

I would shoot some standard 158 grain LRN and 125 to 130 grain jacketed bullets and see what your results are.

I've got the hogues on it. They're huge and very ergonomic. I'm also firing from a supported position.

I hadn't considered this to be honest. I'll look more closely at the rifling this evening. I'm sad to admit I haven't found time to get to the range or do much gun stuff lately but I'm taking notes on what to check and I'm gonna have a nice diagnostic checklist when I go sit down next.

- Bore Leading
- Cylinder chamber & bore alignment
- Loose screws
- Chamber throat dimension
- New ammo (I'll shoot 125gn and 158gn FMJ or JHP)

Thanks again for all the help fellas. I actually really like my SP101 despite my experience the last few times at the range.
