Adapting a US M1917 Revolver Holster to a Remington Sheriff's Model

On Blackie Thomas’s YouTube channel he shows carrying a Pietta 1858 Sheriff’s Model in a replica holster for the US M1917 revolvers. He got his from Sportsman’s Guide. I bought this one from Sarco for $25 + shipping. The quality seems pretty good — nice thick leather and good stitching. There’s no indicator where it was made but I have a feeling it’s from India.

As built, the holster fits the gun except that flap isn’t quite long enough to fasten. So, I added an extension by riveting on a piece of leather. I got the color to almost match just by applying some 100% neatsfoot oil.

When I added the extension I made sure to not block the original hole in the flap. This allows it to still be used for an M1917 revolver.

Edit: I just checked and my Pietta 1851 Navy Sheriff's model also fits.

In what way? I adapted a holster to fit two percussion revolvers.

When I searched for "US M1917 Revolver", I got this:

Which is definitely NOT a black-powder revolver.
If a holster for the 1917 fits a Pietta, then great. But the thread should reflect that.
I also have a 1858 Remi, made by Santa Ana, and may check out that holster. If it fits, I thank for the suggestion.

I like the idea of the extension tab. Instead of the rivets, though, I would have used a brass stud (button) through the existing hole in the flap. And the extension tab would have been external to the flap. That way, the tab would be removable and the whole alteration would have been completely reversible.

That would be another good way to do it, especially if it was an original GI holster. Since it's not I don't mind the permanent alteration.

The thread is about adapting a holster to fit BP guns. It's not about the M1917 revolvers. I think it would be self-evident that a holster for a 1917 revolver would have originally been made for smokeless powder cartridge guns.

If I'd posted about how a USGI cleaning rod for M2 Browning heavy machine guns makes a nice range rod for muzzleloading rifles, would that be an issue? Same concept.

I think this was a great spot for the post as I would not have seen it other wise and missed it.

One of them there screw rivets I use on the wife's horse stuff would have been just the ticket for reversibility.
