Man, this hobby is addicting, and expensive to keep up!

This is 1.5 months of getting into this new found hobby, and after recently turning 21. I'm definitely now in the poor college student category.

Still not near anywhere near most of you guys and gals though collection wise. But I'm hoping to "slowly" build upon it. :)

Here's the two pistols I bought the first month.

Top Shotgun is mine, 12 ga. Remington 870 Wingmaster w/ 28" barrel.

Dad owns the bottom one, Beretta 20 ga. 686 Onyx Pro.

I'm gettin' my dad into this hobby slowly but surely, I'm hoping he starts to get more pistols and rifles so he can hand them down to me later down the road :D

Well, happy shootin'!

That's a pretty good start! I had only one firearm for along time when I first started...Just give it some time & it will really get out of control ;) :neener:

C&R FFL

Welcome aboard!

If you REALLY want to have fun with guns and not spend big bucks, get a C&R FFL. All it takes is filling out a form you can download from the BATF web site, filling it out, making one copy to send to your local chief of police, and sending it in along with a $30.00 check for a three-year license.

It entitles you to order C&R firearms from wholesalers or collectors, usually at the wholesale price. Right now there are still a host of Sovblock rifles going for bargain prices: Russian M44 carbines in excellent shape for around $90.00, Russian M39 rifles in excellent condition for about the same price, and Yugo SKS rifles unissued for $150.00. There are still some Finn M39's around for $200.00 (possibly the most accurate rifle ever issued to line troops), and Yugo Mausers for around $125.00. Best of all, there's also a lot of truly cheap ammo (albeit corrosively primed) for all of these.

Right now about the only C&R pistols I've seen advertized widely are the CZ52's, but who knows when some C&R Makarovs might make it back on the market?

It wouldn't be difficult to start a collection of ten or so rifles for less than half of what you paid for the guns in the photos.

Of course, all these firearms come packed in fifty+ years worth of petrified cosmoline, and you have to totally disassemble and clean them prior to shooting. But if you are crazy like I am, there's a lot of fun in taking a lump of dried grease and turning into a nice-looking and shooting firearm.

Again, welcome aboard!

I know the feeling, 9 guns and 11 months later.... I'm finally broke! :D

I love that 1911. I must get me one now! I guess I'll just have to skip the mortgage payment this month.

Glad I'm not the only one...

I'm in the same boat, but a couple of years further down the road.

Shortly after turning 21 I picked up a CZ-75B and then a Glock 21 a couple of days later. Couldn't stop, so I picked up a Remington 870 about a month later.

Had a little run in with the law which set me back quite a bit (not firearms related) so I didn't purchase anything for almost a year. But now, at 23 its:

CZ 75B
Glock 21
Remington 870
Bushmaster AR-15
Egyptian Maadi AK-47
Mosin-Nagant m44
Steyr M95
CETME
Glock 23C

Nothing too expensive... though I should get a Kimber 1911 sometime soon. I don't know why, I just want one.

Yes, it's horribly addictive, and expensive. Now that skydiivng is done for the year (now THAT's an expensive sport to learn!) I have more money left around at the end of the month.... which just means more guns and ammo.

A month and a half and you've got all those? Impressive.

As a starving college student, well done!

A sig, a good 1911, and a wingmaster. You seem to be working on quality rather than quantity.

Lemme see here. Young, newbie. Just starting and you've got that collection ????????

You have it bad.

I strongly suggest for the benefit of your financial well being that you develop an obsession over ammunition. Ignore the guns and begin drooling over ammunition. Don't get gun catalog, read reloading manuals and catalogs. Learn the in's and out's of ballistics.

Why?

Because there exists two costs related to firearms. Cost of purchase and cost of ownership. Cost of ownership will exceed cost of purchase in short order. Becoming an expert in ammunition will save you buckets of cash (which will then be used to purchase more firearms).

FWIW

Be in no rush:

If you buy a gun a year,
by the time you're my age,
you'll be well into your "second safe".

Buy quality and never sell!

I agree totally. I was like the poster in I had all these guns, but never any money to shoot them. Heck I still have a few almost-never fired still in the safe. The "collecting" or amassing of guns is fun, but you will enjoy your hobby alot more by shooting more. Finally after the uring of a friend I got a reloader. I now load .45 ammo for $3.50 a box. And I shoot a lot more. Way more. I had a hard time spending the $500 on my reloading setup because, well, $500 could have bought me that nice new .45 I wanted. I actually traded two of my "dream" guns so I could get the reloader, lots of bullets and lots of powder. But, in the last 3 months I have fired over 5000 .45 rounds. I now know which of my guns I like, which I really don't and some of which I have no use for now.
That said, it's up to you. But I consider my biggest mistake in this hobby not getting a realoder sooner.

By the way, it is nice to see a young guy like you into this. I don't have that many more years on you, but I like to see younger guys and gals at the range. Good luck in whatever you decide.

I had laid off on the gun buying for a couple of years unless it was a great deal untill a few months ago. I sold a couple of classic cars and a couple of race cars, now I cant wait to go to the next gun show or another pawn shop every weekend. I just hope my wife never catches on. Have fun.

Get a 10/22.. Get anything in a .22LR.. It will keep you at "poor college student" status instead of "poor college student in massive debt" status..

And a 10/22.. is inexpensive fun for the whole family. A gun you will still have fun with when your collection grows to 100+...
