I just picked up my new S&W 1911 target md. and the rear target sights are not centered in the dovetail, whats the best way to adjust this?

Unless you have the tools: vise, brass punch, hammer, and have messed with such before, I'd suggest you take it to your dealer...does he maybe have a gunsmith on board?...or perhaps he can recommend a gunsmith. Its a very minor thing, just a couple taps or so, but if you don't have proper tools and know what you're doing its easy to let the punch slip and scratch up you new gun.

How does it shoot? The sights may not be centered for a reason.

Proper tools are a must, if the rear sight is glued or loctite'd in place you may need to hold a soldering iron to the rear sight screw to melt the glue.

Thanks for the replys,
The S&W 1911 is new and I havent shot it yet. The rear sight is an adjustable sight, so as you know the slide has been threaded to accept the adjustment screw, so there is no reason the rear sight should be off center IMO, after taking the adjusting screw out I can see that the sight is not directly over the hole (although it still threads in). The front sight is not centered either and appears to be off set to match the rear sight. This makes no since to me as again its an adjustable sight. Im going to let S&W center it since there a couple of other things I want them to do.
Does this make since?
