Hi everyone, new here.

I love to shoot. I'm sure most of you know what I mean. Basically, I just love to make big noises and holes in things.

Anyway, I'm looking for new, inexpensive AK-type rifle (I already own a bunch of milsurp and modern stuff too).

Because of the pain it's been to obtain 7.62x39 lately, I kind of want to get a smaller caliber. My question is this: should I go for 5.56x45 or 5.45x39? What are your thoughts?

Also, looking here:http://www.aimsurplus.com/acatalog/copy_of_Romanian_WASR-2_5.45x39_AK_Rifles.html , is this rifle in .223 or 5.56? I know that there are slight differences and I don't want to buy a rifle in .223 since I'll be using military 5.56 ammo.

Thanks!

The WASR-3 is in 5.56X45 and will safely fire all .223 ammo.

I have a WASR-10 and it is a great value for a semi-auto firearm. 7.62X39's lack of availability should only be temporary so I wouldn't advise letting that discourage you from buying a rifle in that caliber.

On the other hand, an AK in 5.56X45 would not be a bad choice either. It would make a great SHTF rifle. I would like to get one at some point, you could make it sort of a poor mans XCR.

An AK in 5.45X39 seems like more of a collector/speacial interest type weapon to me rather than a general purpose rifle. It just hasn't had a huge amount of pupularity in this country since there are soo many already dedicated to the 5.56 and the 5.45 arguably doesn't have any advantage over the 5.56.

He asks about a WASR and gets a link to the XCR vaporware... Hmmmm...

You may want to stick with the GP WASR 10 in 7.62x39.

The new WASRs in 5.56 and 5.45 seem to be a definate toss up, with lots of people unhappy from what I've read.

Point was that the WASR-3 would appeal to the same people that would like the XCR. Not sure what your alluding to...

No this is great. Thanks for the link.

I already have several SKS's so I'm just kind of thinking about getting a new caliber...I like having lots of different little rounds about.

Our wasrgp was spot on target out the box, and shot hole touching groups at 50 yards....!!!!

The Wasr Gp's are great guns but aren't perfect, you can fix em though with a file.

The magwell that was widened to use hi-caps needs to be opened up even more at the forward end, at least ours did -- we have a sar1 for a sortof eyeball templet and we just coppied the sar1's well and opened it up on both forward sides to match. It seems century just didnt take about a about 5-6 mm in lenght and 1 mm wide the front part of well where the well is narrow for the front end of the mag. This work made mags a lot easier to insert and remove.

The GP comes with the G2 Tapco trigger wich is way better FCG than the sar rifles Century sold a few years back.

I think the WASR rifles are a heck of a deal, you get a lot of stuff with them, bayonets, muzzle device, mags, pouch, sling, go get one!
:D

sampei, how about I just follow you around the threads until you stop spamming? Maybe the administrators will flip the bit on emailing you, so we can all start that, too.

I picked up a WASR from AIM back in the spring, and I love it. Mine is 7.62x39. Not sure what part of the country you're in, but here in Texas I have had no problems finding ammo at all, usually $2.89 a box or less, or $50 or so for 500 (new, Wolf or Barnaul). I had the option of going a different caliber, but I really liked the fact that I could buy the same ammo to feed my WASR and SKS's.

For just plain shooting, plinking, and fun, I'd highly suggest picking one up.

I'm in Denver, having a very hard time finding any 7.62x39 at all locally. I have some left from my last big mailorder shipment, but it's very frustrating to not be able to easily pick ammo for my SKS's.

FWIW, I went through the same thought process you're going through a few years ago, when AIM was selling SAR's instead of WASR's. I wound up choosing the .223 over the 5.45X39, mostly for reasons of ammo availability. I have not been disappointed. The .223 AK is fun to shoot, and ammo costs are good. Although I think the 7.62X39 ammo is a little cheaper, there are more loads available for .223.

My only concern with 5.45 is that the ammo is basically only available from online sources. Not that that's bad...I'm just a "belt + suspenders" kinda guy and like the availability of .223.

BTW--what is a WASR? A Romanian-built AK-47 derivative.

I feel for you guys that can't find 7.62x39. That's just not right. I don't know what I'd do if I couldn't feed my babies. Maybe they're funneling it all to Texas where I'm at because they know how much I like to shoot?

I did look at the .223 and the 5.45 AK's, but I decided against it because of mag availability, and I already had a stockpile of 7.62 for my SKS's.
