Hi, so what models of the AK-47 are used in countries where we see AK-47's a lot. Like Afganistan, what country made the AK-47's that are in Afganistan, you see AK-74's and 47 in the media and pictures in that country. All over the world you see AK's, but are they Hungarian, Yugo's, Russian? I have seen AK-47's in IRAQ that look like Yugoslavian, and have heared that IRAQ had it's own production facility to make AK's using machinery from Yugoslavia. Columbia? where did they get theres, even Mexico.

Its not uncommon to see multiple countries selling AKs ( or giving them) to a single country.

These two books will really help you identify them when you see them.
Great AK books.

The Ak-47 and AK-74 Kalashnikov Rifles and their variations by Joe Poyer

Legends and reality of the AK by Val Shilin @ Charlie Cutshaw

Its been awhile since I bouth them at Amazon but they were the cheapest I cound find on Amazon.com.

One thing to remember also is terrorist use whateve AKs they can get their hands on what is readily available so expect to see a hodge podge of countries and even some AKs cobbled toegther from various countries parts.

If you scroll down to the AK, it says that the most common rifle used by the Taliban is the Norinco Type 56. Not sure how accurate IMFDB is though.
makes sense with pakistan's relationship to china. the cross border kashmiri militia guys seem to have a lot of chinese weapons too.

one reason for the Norinco ban was because they do or did sell to terror organizations. Not really surprised.

And the USA may or may not have provided weapons to people we NOW consider terrorists in Afghanistan, just because it was convenient at the time. And France may or may not have provided weapons to the Rwandan army and Hutu militias during the 1994 Rwandan Genocide. And, and, and...

Big governments like to meddle in the affairs of smaller governments. We stick our fingers into regional conflicts, and we label the people we are helping as "freedom fighters." Then later we get upset when those freedom fighters turn turn into terrorists after we lose interest in the region (either because we achieved our immediate goal or because of a political shift here at home).

When I buy guns, I am always looking for a combination of reliability and cost effectiveness. I hear people yelling about "BUYING AMERICAN," but that's not as easy as it used to be. Some American companies (Springfield Armory) barely make any guns anymore. They just import Croatian, Brazilian, and Czech guns and stamp their names on them. Other companies (Ruger, S&W) have made statements and decisions that are inflammatory toward RKBA supporters. Other companies (Winchester) may still make some guns here, but they are owned by foreign companies (FN in the case of Winchester).

People are people, and one of the clearest lessons of history is that people do nasty things to each other. No nation has clean hands. No large company is "pure" in terms of its national identity. If you want a 100% American gun, then you would probably have to go with one of the smaller manufacturers like Keltec, Accu-Tek, Hi-Point, Heritage Mfg, or Cobray/Leinad, or one of the Bryco/Jennings/Jiminez/Raven/Phoenix/Davis/Lorcin guns. I can't even guarantee that all of those are "pure American," and even if they were... ours is a nation that has directly supported terror in recent history.

I buy the best guns I can get for the least money possible, regardless of where those guns may come from.

The terrorist use whatever they can get but the Afghan military use Hungarian AMD65's almost exclusively
The Afghan National Police use the AMD 65, but the Afghan National Army uses all different kinds of AKs. Literally. Egyptian, Chinese, Russian...they're all over.

IIRC, I read somewhere that if Kalashnikov was paid the royalties due him from just the Chinese made AK's, he'd be a multi-millionaire many times over.

yeah but the communists would have made millions of any other comparable assault rifle they deemed to be their standard. politics and not much based on performance and market choices.

Iraqi military and police use a broad smattering of AKs from a variety of different manufacturers, but the locally manufactured variant is the Tabuk, which is effectively a license built model of the Yugoslav M70.

That being said, my time in country I've seen many different variants (Egyptian, Russian, Yugoslavian, Chinese)...
