anyone ahve any experience with an extended mag release for AK. Would rather not drill an extension onto the present one, but my thumbs get bloody from the present set up.
Here's the one I use: http://www.flashdistributor.com/magrel.html , it runs $15 plus shipping, no drilling needed. Too long as is but a couple of minutes w/the Dremel to shorten it & round off the edges, apply a little epoxy mixed w/black paint and you have a quick & positive extended mag release that releases the mag with a swipe of the thumb as you grab the empty mag. I'd post a pic of my SAR-2 w/this release but the site hosting my photos is down right now.

Does it seem like the mag release is real hard to push to get the mags to release? I had two AK's that were like that and a couple of swipes with a jewelers file to break the edges that contact the mag cured it. The stampings are sharp and grab the mag making it real hard to let go. The mag release should not be making your thumbs bloody, or be hard to push.
I never had any problems w/AK mag releases until I tried the 5.45 SAR-2. The mag release seems smaller and more difficult to operate (less leverage). Here's a shot of the extended mag release on my SAR-2:
