will one hit higher or lower than the other? if so by how much? i have an 8" dong at 150 yards. if i hit that im happy.

i like the performance of the 154 gr soft point in gell test and wanted to try some.

That changes with distance?

And where are you finding 7.62x39 ammo (standard AK cartridge) loaded with 154grain projectiles? All I see is pretty standard 123grn stuff +-a grain or two.

154 sound like a typical projectile loaded into 7.62x54R, which is not a standard AK chambering.

Tula is loading 154grn soft point ammo now. I've shot a box of it and it's pretty accurate and seems to be more consistent then the 123 grain offerings. It drops a little bit more, but only about 2" at that distance. Granted my experience is limited, but i am planning on buying a case when cash is available. It's good stuff

You've got to be kidding me! {/Chandler Bing voice}

I have shot both weights of 7.62x39mm, but I only compared them a couple of times, and only at 50 yards.

Looking at my notes, the results were:
1. No appreciable difference with a Yugo SKS.
2. The lighter round shot about 1" higher with a PAP M92 AK pistol. This was with Wolf 154g SP vs Herter's (Wolf) 122g FMJ.

Both tests compared several strings of shots, and both were from a bench rest. The pistol is more subjective to recoil. Testing at greater range would clarify if this was a solid trend.

If you are looking for hunting ammo I would keep looking. Tulammo is really nasty dirty stuff. If it's target ammo you don't need the heavier round

For me, the issue with hitting that 8" target wouldn't be the ammo, it would be those AK sights (I'm just assuming that's what we're talking about here).
Anyway, what I would typically do here (regardless of what rifle) would be to put a large sheet of cardboard out at 150 yds, with two large circles drawn with a sharpie pen on it. Then fire both ammos, from a rest, at each circle. This will give you reliable, consistent groups, and quickly tell you where each round likes to go, while avoiding the time and frustration of wasting ammo just barely missing the steel gong, and trying to guess exactly where they're hitting.
5 rounds of each ammo, should quickly answer the question.

sorry, its 9" target. can't use steel targets at that shooting range. when its dry i can see any misses hit the dirt wall right behind it. i had been using a stock chinese sks with iron sites and do well with tula 122 gr fmj. i even hit right above the target with a mossberg and winchester 1 oz slug.

im going to try my ak clone with a new scope. everything i do with firearms is for when we no longer have police. i do not hunt anymore. but i can. i have found wolf fmj is not quite as accurate and golden tiger fmj is even worse.

im interested in the 154 gr soft point for less chance of over penetration maybe?

Its really not all that hard. :)

The AK's irons arent as bad as many want to make them, and better than some others.

I picked up a couple of cases of Wolf 154 grain SP's about 5 years or so back. My experience with Wolf has always been hit or miss, but this lot of 154's was one that was a "hit".

My favorite AK ammo has been the old Barnaul 125 grain SP's. Its always been the most consistent and accurate in my guns.

I shot this at 200 yards with my SAR1, with its "slightly" canted irons and the Wolf 154's. The lower group was fired from a rest to confirm zero, the upper, from a cross legged sitting position and fired at a steady cadence. I take credit for the flyer....

If you cant read the rule, the "head" on that target is 6"x6" for reference.
