Alaska...or Africa?

My first advice would be to listen to H&H, he knows what he is talking about. From my northern Canada (as far north as Ak but on the other side of the border) and Africa experiences (wasn't hunting in Africa just traveling) I'd say Africa. Africa is really special. If you have a chance to do it definitely go for it. You will definitely not regret it.

AFRICA!! I have several friends who have gone to Africa more than once. Each cannot wait to go back--the place is like a drug it seems. You won't be sorry.

You know it doesn't really matter where you go hunt. Just go and hunt. It's all good.

Be sure to get your shots if you choose to go to the African continent.

Highly dependent on where you are going in Africa. See a travel medicine clinic they will inform you of any recommended vaccinations. Most of South Africa require none.

The only shots required in Alaska are drunk out of an aluminum cup back in camp, maybe with a pack of wolves singing in the distance.

Of course, you can have those shots in Africa also, though I don't know what you'd hear in the distance - wildebeest farts?

If you are in true wild Africa you'll hear Hyenas whooping, lions roaring, wood doves cooing, elephants screaming, hippos snorting and such. If you are on a budget game farm you'll likely hear traffic from the 4 lane highway just over the hill. No kidding one of the places I checked out was located between a strip mine and a major highway. Real rustic, true Africa was what the ad said..:scrutiny::rolleyes: Careful guys there are almost as many snakes and shoddy operators and scammers in South Africa as there are in Alaska.

If your looking for a "guaranteed hunt", try a hi-fence one. Pay your money,
pick out something and blast away.

Or like most, just buy your lic and take your chances. That`s called hunting. :)

Glad this was covered, it came to mind about shots for Africa and none for Alaska, part of the expense outside of the $7,000 figure I have to think:)

I've been casually Googleing the subject and came across some interesting African Safari info from the T. Jeffery Safari Company. They've got some management hunts where you can get 20+ animals for under $6k, albeit none of the large dangerous game:

If it was a first time safari for me, I'd do one of those management hunts just to get a feel for hunting in Africa and be able to ask some in person questions.

Alaska without a doubt. I used to live and work there (no time to hunt when working) I've since gone back 14 times for various critters and would go again in a heartbeat. I can't say anything about Africa as I've never hunted there. As far as scenery goes, I don't see how it could be better than Alaska or western Canada.

For me, Africa!
The first trips, I'd start off with plains game and work my way up to buff. (Elephant are too big for me!)

Now all I need is some money! :D

Hey, a guy can dream, can't he? ;)

I think there are some elk in SE, but if you come up here as was pointed out, you should plan to multi-task and include a variety of potential game and potential fish. If you time it right you can overlap seasons. Moose tend to be pretty restricted due to hunting pressures in many GMU's. Caribou less so. Black bear are like squirrels here. If you do it right, it will not be relaxing at all. It will be like an endurance marathon. But you'll come back with a solid ton of meat and hides. The fewer amenities you have, the more money you'll have for other things. Most hunting here is very rough.

ALASKA FOR SURE! Africa= bugs, bad food, hot and dusty, disease, etc.
Alaska= beautiful, people speak English, good food and bugs (yeah we got 'em too!), super friendly people and they take American money!

I know a gentleman that's an PH that lives in Coral Gables, Fla. part time, the rest of the time in Tanzania. He's gotten about 5 tuskers, and 2 big maned lions himself. I haven't any idea as to what's charged for a hunt, but have been invited to go. Even just a photo safari would be exciting, let alone toting a .458 Lott around! Maybe one of these days!

I'm not sure what one i'd choose. I did Alaska for 25 years, hunting all over the state, it's a much harder hunt than you think. You just don't land and have a moose, bear and a caribou all around to shoot. Caribou are the easiest though, as when they are moving through, you will see hundreds of them. If you are behind them though, you probably won't even get a shot.

I've shot a lot of swamp donkeys (moose) and i have no desire to shoot another one. I think the most fun was hunting big bears, or hunting the islands for Sitka blk. tails... Also, there is elk on Raspberry island (near Kodiak) too...

There are also good populations of Roosevelt Elk on Afognak Island. And now we are seeing them on the main island of Kodiak, though they haven't really established a huntable population. Roosevelt elk get up to about 1100 pounds, so they are quite a bit larger than the Rocky Mountain variety.

The best Alaskan hunt (the best bang for the buck), is the Mulchatna caribou herd in August or September. It's near a 100% success rate and no guide is required. These are the biggest caribou on the planet, far larger than you'll see elsewhere in Alaska.
I'm not sure how many a non-resident can take, but residents can take four or five. You can also take wolves, moose, black bears in the same area without a guide and with appropriate tags. There are tens of thousands of lakes across SW Alaska, and you can have an enormous area all to your own.

Elk for 7k??? ***!!!

around 700.00 for a tag (NM/CO) + gas and food = around 1k or so....

My vote would be for AK... Been to Africa and didnt leave anything there....

Already been decided a long time ago.

ALASKA

When I retire, I'm going for a month. I'm gonna soak it in, and enjoy.

This is worth keeping in mind. There are no gun bearers here. At least I've never seen one. Nobody is going to "bwana" you and prepare your kills while you wax poetical over gin and tonic. Trails are scarce and roads scarcer. If you're serious about it you need to be in very good physical condition. Way better than I am, for sure. When you butcher a moose it seems to go on forever, then you have to haul it out of whatever dark impossible bog hole it died in. I prefer putzing around shooting squirrels ;-)
