Well in that case I guess we shouldn't mind arbitrarily raising "clerical" fees for permits to carry, or purchase, or extending the waiting period to purchase by a week or two.

Straw man.

Although all the things that you mention are de facto infringements that are imposed by someone acting in an official capacity...a floor salesman at Wal-Mart talkin' smack about your choice in rifles isn't in the same category. Not even close.

i.e. Your neighbor may vehemently oppose your guns and your shooting activities, and would like very much to put a stop to it...but that's just chin music. What he wants to do and what he can do are miles apart.

I've encountered that type a few times. My response is to smile, wink, and say: "Well...good thing for me/us that there ain't jack you can do about it."

I concede that it isn't the same as government-mandated infringements, but it also isn't the same as your neighbor's lip service. The clerk ranting about the evils of AR's just doesn't sit will with me. Since we DO give gun shop salesman some level of discretion regarding who to sell to, even if they are legal and pass all checks (if they suspect straw purchases) this guy could just as easily say he "suspects" a straw purchase for anyone buying an AK. Because after all, "he said he needed it for hunting and who hunts with an AK?!?" etc. I am not saying this particular one did that, or anyone I've seen...I'm just sayin' gun shops should be the one place I can go and NOT hear an ignorant rant about EBR's.

Sure it is.

Since we DO give gun shop salesman some level of discretion regarding who to sell to, even if they are legal and pass all checks (if they suspect straw purchases) this guy could just as easily say he "suspects" a straw purchase for anyone buying an AK.

And if the buyer filled out the form 4473 correctly, and answered the question: "Are you buying this for yourownself" and he doesn't see you take the money from a second party...he has no reason to play the straw buyer card, and if he tries, it's time to bring the manager into the equation.

And Wal-Mart isn't a gun shop. It's a big box store that happens to sell guns. As such, they can make the call on which types of guns they sell. If an EBR is in the rack with a price tag on it...it's for sale. A clerk that actively tries to block a sale without just cause is subject to termination. Not likely that he'd be fanatical enough to put his job in jeopardy just to keep one store item from being sold.

As far as I can tell from this thread, the clerk in question did no more than offer a personal opinion...as unpopular as it was among the gunnies of the world...and that's all he did. A man can talk about how he'd like to hand me a beat-down all he wants. Until he acts on that desire, we have no problem.

I think we'll have to just agree to disagree. I think words have more power than you think they do. But I guess he is fine as long as he is kept away from any microphones, keyboards, or anti's who will latch onto his words and use them to try and further their agenda.

And someone saying he'd like to beat you up could be construed as a threat depending on how it is said. Just sayin'
