Alliant Black MZ, tell me about it.

I saw a reference to Alliant Black MZ in Field & Stream. Is it like Blackhorn 209 or just another Pyrodex clone?

Alliant Black MZ powder is basically rebranded APP/Shockey's Gold 2F that has an even chunkier granulation.
It's not like Pyrodex because it doesn't contain sulphur, and unlike Blackhorn 209 it's not a type of smokeless substitute powder.

i have used Alliant Black MZ powder. It is not rebranded APP/Jim Shockeys Gold powder. i have used those powders extensively and Black MZ is much more powerful than either. For years my favorite powder has been Goex Pinnacle. Pinnacle gives 200+ fps more velocity per given load than APP and 100+ fps more than JSG. So does Black MZ.

Alliant Black MZ powder is Goex Pinnacle in a different can. All the APP powders require a tight fitting sabot seated very hard on the powder. A failure to seat the sabot hard on the powder leads to inconsistent velocities. Black MZ works well in most conventional muzzleloders, including my TC New Englander.

sorry brother but it IS repackaged american pioneer powder that has a little more quality control. It still clumps up in the can.

Goex Pinnacle was made by American Pioneer. I dont think they make this powder any more since Hodgdon took over Goex.

Blackmz produces very erratic velocity from one shot to the next.

Blackhorn209 if you want the actual best!

Not true at all. A friend and i have chronographed it: SD was 17 fps using an Encore .50 rifle with 26" barrel, Winchester 209 primer, 100 grains of Black MZ and the 250 grain SST bullet. i'm on numerous ML sites where you are also a member. Strange that your site shows its sponsored by both APP and BH 209.

i'm well aware Pinnacle was made for Goex and its no longer widely available. Powder, Inc. still sells it.

ive reviewed APP in the past, a year or 2 before blackhorn209 popped up. They do not sponsor my forum but help me with some supplies when i need to review them and help others.

If your gun can shoot it, blackhorn209 all the way. I still shoot APP in my sidelocks time to time, but i do much prefer pyrodex.
