I just returned from the local Alltel store (Sparkelberry shopping center, Columbia,SC). I have been a customer of their's for several years. This is the first time I saw "the sign"": "It is prohibited to carry a firearm, deadly weapon or dangerous material anywhere on these premises."
The picture was a circle with a slash over a revolver AND a KNIFE.:banghead::
They don't even want you to have a pocket knife on the premises.
Now, this sign means nothing legal to CWP holders as it is not in accordance with the law. If you are discovered to have your gun, they can ask you to leave; If you don't, you can be charged with trespassing only.
Our agreements will be up in a a couple of months and my wife and I will both drop them. I will send a letter to the local manager and to corporate explaining why.
I will explain that any object can be "dangerous" if it's used that way and that BG's don't obey signs that they don't like.
I don't like victim dis-armament zones.

Might get farther talking to the manager about it. Most of the time, its something they got in a big packet from corporate and just throw it all up.

i agree. you should first voice your disapproval to management, and if they don't care then drop them. i think at least if they had an opportunity to understand how utterly ineffective their sign is then maybe it would at least educate them.

Definitely talk to local...I argued with them (corporate) for about a year trying to tell them how poor our service was and trying to see if there was anything at all we could do about it. Went into the store once and they let us out of our contract on the spot when they punched it in the computer and saw that I had actually tried to resolve the problem. The store was a whole lot better to deal with.

I havent dealt with alltel since 01, and never will ever again. I tried to cancel my contract due to military orders to a location that didnt have alltel (as per THEIR contract) and they ended up trying to charge me over 600 dollars.

this gives me yet another reason to avoid them like the plague, as if i needed another one

How many times do you really need to go to the Alltel store? The ONLY time I have been in a Cingular store was when I needed a new battery under warranty. I know, it's about more then that. But, what happens when you switch to ATT and they put the sign up? Now you are pissed for the 2 year length of your contract. I think a lot of those signs are more a "Well, we had the sign up" type deal. Makes them feel good for "trying" if anything ever happens and really doesn't mean anything until then.

that may be true (the signs are only a "well we tried") but, for every store that puts up a big sign of a gun and a slash through it, they are educating every person that walks by that guns are bad things and that customers are safer without guns around. (at least that's the subliminal message)

As gun owners, one of the biggest ways we can make an impression on these anti-gun organizations is to through the free market. There's ATT, Verizon, T-Mobile, Globalstar.....the list goes on. If Alltel loses 5,10,15 long term customers, and all of the customers say that it was due to the anti-gun sign in their store, someone is going to notice.

just my opinion of course.
