ALUMA-HYDE II comments?

I have a G19 slide that I coated with AHII. After curing, it rides in my kydex holster and has shown only minimal wear.

As with Duracoat and any other finish, the instructions have to be followed to the letter for best results.

I used it on my stainless AR15 barrel about a year and a half ago. Easy to use and holds up real well. After assembly, I just
cleaned the outside of the barrel with MEK and sprayed it on. I put the rifle in the safe till the next weekend. No problems so far.

Without actually buying it I really haven't seen the directions for it. What kind of prep work is needed? Obviously it needs to be de-greased well, can break cleaner be used? What is needed to be done with the original bluing? scuffed with sandpaper, removed, or just de-greased?

I've watched some videos on youtube, they all say prep is the key to a good finished product, but say nothing about proper prep work

Thanks for the responses thus far!

I sandblast and spray with brake cleaner to degrease before using Alumahyde II. The Brownell's website has a good video of it being used. I get fantastic results. I either heat the can in hot water or leave it out in the sun to warm up. I also leave the parts out in the sun to warm up before spraying. I use a hair dryer between coats.

I used the Matte Black AHII on my old Winchester 1200, it looks great, I'll post pics if you want. Anyway i made sure to completely disassemble and sandblast all parts i wanted to paint. Then I wiped them all down with acetone hung the parts and did several thin coats as instructed. But be careful the nozzle clogs easily. Let dry a few days before reassembling. It says you can spray over previous finishes or bluing as long as it's degreased, but I didn't so I can't tell you how that would turn out... I think it's a fantastic product to refinish guns you can't bake. Mine hasn't scratched or anything yet! Good luck! :)

Thanks for the replies.

Sandblasting will cost extra. Already have spent more than I was hoping to on this project. Plus I have a couple of other projects I figured I'd coat at the same time, one long rifle, one medium shotgun and one short shotgun. IIRC, one of the guys in my squad at MCT had a rifle that had almost no finish left on it we were told it was because someone cleaned it with break cleaner, Don't know if that was true or not.

spartanpride, I'd love to see a pic of your 1200, the Matte black is what I plan to use! I did see they sell extra nozzles and I figured I'd order them.

bigbob76, I heard about the hair dryer trick, but not about warming the can (in warm water or in the sun).

Question though, does humidity play a part in this? I know it's an epoxy of sorts, but....

It's also great for ball peen hammers and pipe wrenches. ;)

I did part of a 9MM AR barrel. I put a free float tube on it and had to protect the spots under the block anyway, so I did the whole back half of the barrel.

Maybe brake fluid but not brake cleaner. Brake cleaners will not harm bluing.

Wow, I'm a Yankee and you're in Alabama.... I read my quote in southern drawl and your response in Norther Sarcasm! The power of the written word, you just don't know what it means or how it's said sometimes! LOL! Cheer's!

No sarcasm on my end. I simply stated the facts, brake fluid will remove bluing but brake cleaners will not. If you read sarcasm into that then I apologize, there was none intended.

Well once again we in Missouri are stuck in the middle. :D

Open sights, I don't understand? I didn't detect any sarcasm no matter what accent I read it with.

Sorry still haven't figured out how to quote here...

No hard feelings here! I'm just grateful for you're insight!

CZguy, yep you're in the middle, A Connecticut Yankee can find sarcasm in anything, even if not intended. Just our nature I guess.

Thank you all for your advice!
