Am I gonna win or lose this bet?

To be completely honest, this entire thing comes down to who is a more active shooter.

I know collectors who own several hundred guns, and shoot about once a year. I could probably beat them using a lead pipe, some corroded ammo from the 50's and a ball peen hammer.

I also know guys who shoot different guns daily. These guys can pick up a broken AK and still get on paper at 100 yds.

Hint: shoot about 500 rounds from your rifle before the match, and get that scope sighted in! LOL

Well, no, that will be "controlled for" - what I'm proposing to him NOW is this little twist:

1. Each of us shoots 1 group with EACH rifle. So four groups total are shot. Two groups with my rifle (one me and one him), and two groups with his rifle (ditto).

2. Then of the two groups with a given rifle, we simply use the best group as the measurement, regardless of who shot it, and scrap the other group.

3. Also, if BOTH of us agree that any given called flier is actually a flier, then you can shoot a 6th shot to substitute out and scratch the flier.

This gives the gun every opportunity, and eliminates skill, and he REALLY wouldn't be able to talk if it was MY group we used on his rifle, and I still beat him.

:)

i am really pulling for the k-31 and those milsurps can surprize you. but i think that winchester is gonna each your lunch :(

Tough call, but I'll bet on the Winchester

I own one of each of these rifles right now and they both shoot about the same as far as accuracy goes. I've shot many Winchester model 70s and many Swiss K-31s. While I have no written in stone data to back it up, it seems that I remember that the model 70s shot better than the Swiss K-31s most of the time.

That's not to say that the K-31 is not a good rifle. I love mine and plan on getting another one as soon as I find another one in good shape. I'd put my money on the Winchester though. ;)

I haven't found a pre-64 Winchester of any model that is not a very accurate rifle once I've gotten used to it. I've had quite a few K-31s and it seems to be the luck of the draw with them even when they are in good shape. One will be a 2 MOA rifle and the next will be a 4 or 5 MOA rifle. Almost all the Winchesters I've owned and still own that are pre-64 are a 2 MOA or less most of the time. :scrutiny:

Good luck. Have fun. Please let us know how it goes. :)

Joe

"...both scoped..." Won't matter. A scope will not make a rifle shoot better. It'll only allow you to see the target better.
Just give the guy the 'C' note.

When I asked if both were scoped, I meant is one scoped and one w/iron sights or are they both on equal footing. A scope won't make a rifle shoot better, but it can make the shooter shoot better.

Did you guys shoot? I am curious to know the results.

Nope, sorry - didn't go yet. We agreed to bet $25 instead of $100 as a more friendly bet. But the bet is still on - just have to get him to the range - he's very busy (as am I) - he's a dentist - but I will definitely update here after we do this....

He probably has 12 or so Pre-64s to choose from - yeah I'll probably lose but that's ok, if it's close.

I suggest you zero that scope and get some SERIOUS practice in with your rifle. Sounds like he knows those Winchesters inside and out.

Also, make the bet interesting, like 2-3 boxes of premium ammo.

I do like the idea of swapping rifles and having you shoot the opposite members guns. Just remember to swap them back and do the same thing.
