If it is only a few boxes, I'll generally give it to someone that owns a gun in that caliber. Currently, I have some 20ga shells, 380 and 25ACP that I don't own guns to shoot the ammo.
I have friends who own guns in a variety of calibers I don't own, so I have quite a mixture of ammo in my ammo cabinet. I just have to play a game of 20 questions before each range trip to find out what guns everyone are bringing so I'll know which boxes to toss in the range bag.
I bought some .223 yesterday, and I don't own anything that chambers it. I bought it to more or less take it apart and try to understand if I want to get in 5.56 ARs.
I don't really plan to learn much, but I'm trying to more or less get used to the idea of a tiny bullet and tiny cartridge being used for SD.
I got 200 rounds of Federal Gold Medal Match .308 for free, and I didn't have anything to shoot it in. Being the swell fellow that I am, I gave it to a friend on the understanding that "you owe me big-time". He still owes me.
i have two pristine boxes of ww superx silvertips for 300 savage, 5 mixed boxes of 250-3000. 1 box 30/40crag and 500 alcan primers that are older than I am
I officially fell prey to this syndrome--about 3 months before the CMP finally sold their Inlands, I went and bought a box or so of .30 Carbine. First time I owned ammunition for a rifle that I don't own in any quantity.
Unless you count the random 30mm Depleted Uranium round I have, and several "onesies" just for the nifty-factor, then no, I don't tend to own ammo for weapons I don't own.
I wouldn't either, I had one, not sure where it is...
I had and got rid of :
Activ Shotgun shells [dates me huh?] I let someone have.
Also some Fiocchi 24 and 32 gauge shotgun shells,.
The Montgomery Ward and Sears Roebuck shotgun shells
25ACP, 32ACP, .380, .480, .454 and the 30 cal carbine ctgs back when a buddy had a Ruger Blackhawk that shot these. [What a hoot!]
We always wondered what happened to the 2500 AA hulls we left on the ground from KY to FL with the "Kliroy was here" custom printed logo...
It's hard enough keeping .22 lr, .22 mag., .38 sp., .357 mag., .44 sp., .44 mag., 9mm, .40, .45 acp, 12 ga, 20 ga, .308, 7.62x39, and .223 for the guns that I have .
I've got some .257 Roberts and .250-3000 Savage. Apparently my Grandpa was using them to form .244 (6mm) and .22-250 in the days before he could get factory brass in those chamberings.
Back when surplus ammunition was a real bargain, a friend used to buy large quantities of ammunition in anticipation of surplus rifles he was going to buy. He ended up buying a case of 7.7x58mm Japanese on Hotchkiss strips. He never ended up getting a rifle, and finally sold it on the internet to avoid having to pay to move it from Cleveland to Seattle when he got a job with Boeing.
I stumbled across an inventory clearing sale at "The world's largest retailer that shall not be named" and bought 140 round of 45/70. That was all they had, and I figured it's an investment at worst. I'd like one someday, but may end up selling the ammo at a gunshow someday after the price goes up.

Bought a couple hundered rounds of 30 carbine and 10 magazines in anticipation of the CMP sale, then watched them price the things so exorbidantly that it wasn't practical to get the gun. For $450, I'd rather get a brand new one with a warranty from Auto Ordnance instead of one that has been beaten around by the Italian military 3rd hand for the past 50 years. Having an "authentic" isn't worth as much to me as having a gun in decent shape with a non-shot-out barrel for a couple hundered dollars difference.
