Ammo Prices

Prices on guns and ammo generally just go up.
Tain't so.

I remember thinking that I was getting a good deal at 13 cents a round for 9mm FMJ plinking ammo bought in bulk back in the early 1990's.

Then prices came down.

For many years you could buy 9mm FMJ for under 11 cents a round at Wal-Mart without even having to buy in bulk. If you looked around for sales and bought in bulk you could get 9mm FMJ for under 8 cents a round.

Prices STAYED at that level for about 10 years (and I'm not talking inflation corrected prices, the ACTUAL marked prices stayed at that level) during which I bought a lot of ammunition.

Now prices are up some, to about 19 to 20 cents for 9mm FMJ. If you correct that for inflation, that means that ammo today costs about what it did in the early 1990s before the prices dropped. And it looks like the prices are actually coming down a little.

I managed to walk into Wallyworld and snag some Blazer 9mm for $8.95 a box - a steal in today's market.

Take care all -

Was at Gander Mountain last weekend and saw Remington 22lr rifle bulk ammo for $24.99. Evidently the demand for this high priced ammo was not there as the entire shelf was full of this ammo.

Same thing at Wally World. The Blazer Brass moves fast (50 pack of 9mm) since it's priced at $8.97.

The Remington .223 hasn't moved in what appears to be years. It's something like $10.x for a box of twenty.

well i for one was very disappointed to see that when ammoman restocked their m193 prvi ammo today, they bumped the case price up dramatically.

i was planning to buy several cases, but not now. at the moment, it's cheaper to buy from wideners and pay the 10% TN sales tax.

it's a gamble, because of the legislative climate, but i'm going to wait for lower prices

eh, good luck. i dont see anything with the current administration thats going to lower prices. they'll either stay at current levels, or go way up.

thats what i like about .22s ~$10 for a box of 500 :D

:is anyone else having weird things typing in the quick reply box? after each character my curser moves to the left, not right... so it all ends up backwards? :

You may be having a stroke. Take a couple of aspirin, that's what I usually do when stuff like that happens.

That is.....if you're still there to read this.

:D

Since January I'm spending ten to fifteen bucks on ammo every 2 weeks on payday.

A few hours ago, at Wal-mart, I bought a 15 round box of 12 ga for 10.67 and couple of 50 round .22s. The ammo shelves looked about empty. The clerk told me that was the last box of 12 ga. she had.

A guy in front of me asked for .45 ACP.
She asked how many?
He replied how many do you have?
"Still plenty." she replied.
He bought ten boxes.

I stopped at wallyworld in Auburn AL today and found ammo!!! No .22, but I got 5 100rnd boxes of .45, 5 boxes of .40, and 5 of .380. Average of 30$ a box. Spendy, but at least I can go shoot now!

Honestly, I have enough ammo (the regular stuff) to last me for several years right now at my rate of usage. The stuff that I don't have much of is target grade 22 rimfire ammunition. I could use a case of Wolf MT and possibly some Eley.

Good idea......

A couple posts back someone mentioned about every payday buying a couple boxes of ammo. Good idea!! $20 or so, whatever can be afforded - could store away a decent amount of ammo in a few months.

Good luck all -

Sounds right but I still feel as though the Remchester-bys of the world are laughing all the way to the bank.
You mean like the oil companies? I say to heck with them. Stop buying for six months and see where ammo prices go. I have not been to the range since last July and have no plans to go until ammo prices come back down, just like oil prices. I still, however, buy and read gun magazines, trade and buy firearms, and visit my collection often and put them back in the safe. I found that I can still participate in firearms related activities without buying ammo. It may not be as much fun, but trading in my V6 for a 4 banger wasn't as much fun either; however, it apparently helped oil prices come back down.

5 Screw has a good point.

Get some snap caps and keep up your trigger practice, and wait for the prices to go down.
