Aside from the question of 'should I?' (should you?, should they?) - Barriers found in urban or suburban areas are a relatively hard, single surface of a fairly common material. Wood, concrete, brick, light metal sheeting and the such. Not a lot of AR500 steel walls, normally. Nor is shooting through a swimming pool or display aquarium likely.

Various testing has established the following criteria for a 'Penetrator': High sectional density, much velocity and a pointy entering point.

I have a good idea what I would use, but I don't have any notion of your equipment, so I'm not going to suggest anything specific.

I have to say your introduction with the phrase "... [shoot] ... an assailant through a barricade..." That comment is a contradiction in terms. Justifying such a shooting would require a lot of information, pard.

As amusing as this thread might be and as amazing as it is that it has gone on for 3 pages without anyone noting that it should have been started in Handguns: General Discussion (ammunition) or Strategies, Tactics, and Training , I think we've drifted well away from any additional useful information being posted
