No need to compress the data

There is no need to compress the data. If you use both upper and lower case Roman alphabet plus the 10 ordinal numbers you get 62 individual distinct characters to use where our base 10 system onoly uses 10 characters. With base 62 arithemetic you can use 7 characters to represent OVER 35 TRILLION combinations (62^8 -1). With 8 places you can represent 13,537,086,546,263,551 (over 13 QUADRILLION) combinations. That should suffice.

Didn't I read earlier that California has already passed this? That means the camel already has his nose in the tent. You all know what happens next.

It's inevitable, boys and girls. Best lie back and enjoy it. And always carry Vasiline in your pocket/purse/fanny pack etc.

Two completely different matters.

In October 2007, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed into law AB 1471, requiring that all new models of semiautomatic pistols sold in California on or after Jan. 1, 2010, be engraved in two or more places with an identifying code that is transferred to the cartridge case on firing.

Problem for the law is that it requires 2 or more places to RELIABLY stamp and the technology can only currently stamp via the firimg pin and even them unreliably.

The law will end up being one of those on the statute book but never capable of implementation.

Thank God I don't live in a state where this is an 'issue', at least not yet. I felt like doing something anyways, so here is a list of the contact information for the representatives from each state listed on the ammunitionaccountability.org website along with the bills they have submitted. I know we have representative contact info elsewhere on THR but I figured this would make it easier for someone like me who started from page 1 of this thread and read until the end to contact someone. I feel this is a credible threat that must be stopped!

Maddog,
You've nailed it. It's not about crime control, it's about American citizen control.

As someone who's written compression software, I can tell you that the whole one character = LOC argument is irrelevant. Using tables to compress large, often occurring data segments doesn't concern us here. The goal here is to represent as many unique combinations are possible and with alphanumeric codes, it's very possible.

They want all of the old, non-complying ammo turned in?

Were they born that stupid, or did they have to go to a pubic skule for that? Frankly, it is almost an invitation to deliver the non-complying ammo/bullets via Remington Express, or any of its sister companies (Armalite Express, Bushmaster Express, Ruger Express, Springfield Express, Colt Express, etc., etc.

I just today go my Texas State Rifle Association magazine with an article about this.

None of the introduced bills have done anything but die.

The technology does not exist, at least not in terms of physical thingummies to do it. The one guy who's promoting it does not have the money to make any equipment, and has been laughed at by all those to whom he's gone to beg money.

IOW, it's time to find something else about which to get all worrified about "They".
