I have a chance to pick up a used Amsec safe. It has a TL-30 rating
and a 1850 deg 2hour UL fire rating.
Tagged as a Major series about 40 x 32 x 26 outside dims.
Lock is a LaGard. Seems to be in good shape.
I know there are a few safe people on this site, asking if you have
a idea of weight, I'm guessing at about 1000 lbs?
Plan if I get it is to repaint it ad some carpet to the inside and
use for "overflow" handgun storage.
Should I pay somebody to service the lockwork before I
install it?
Any thoughts?
Thanks

I would need to see a photo to help with weight.

Yes, I would have a qualified safe tech look at anything used. Drilling open high security safes often cost more than you pay for it. I would also consider a new lock for this very reason.

Thanks for the reply.
Will try to get back and get a picture of it next week.
Weight is not real important, I've got a forklift on my end, of course
I can't drive it into my den! Just kinda need to come up with a loading
plan at the store it's at. Sling and a boom truck or 4 big guys and a dolly.
How much could something that size weigh?
Would you think maybe $250-$300 range would do service and a new
lock if I took it some place for service?
Thanks
Dave

You're probably going to be at least 1,500 pounds. Depending on the interior, you could be as much as 2,000 pounds. A forklift should be fine. It's too much weight with too low of a center of gravity for a dolly.

Here in St. Louis you'd pay about $350 if we came to you. That would include the service call, labor, and an average new lock.

DaveP;

I'd say a ton to 2,500 lbs, but that's just an educated guess. And yes, do have the lockworks inspected before locking it up! That's also an excellent time to have the combination of your choice put on the locks.

Here's some guidelines for picking a new combo: All number groups should be separated by at least ten digits. The last number group should not lie within the 80-0-20 quadrant on the dial. Don't use easily derived number groups that equate to your address, phone number(s), birthdates, or particularly your SSN. What's your favorite car? Let's say it's a 1965 Pontiac GTO. What year did you buy your first house? What year was your first child, or mother, or dog, born? So, 65-84-57: car, house, mother, see?

Thanks Guys.
I'll try for a picture next week.
Sounds like time to borrow the boom truck.
Will the door lift out of the hinges, thinking to sling
it with the fork lift. If the door is removed any reason not to
move it around by sticking the forks in the opening with
blocking at the rear interior? Seems like a easy way to handle
it for repainting.

DaveP;

Most of the time, unless you really do have the equipment to do it right, it's better to leave the door on. Pulling and replacing a door that's as heavy as that one's going to be is not a "gimmie" proposition.
