With all of the threads about CCWing on a commercial plane I thought about other means of travel. It is illegal to CCW on an Amtrak train. I assume everyone here would support the right to carry on a train? As it is not as potentially dangerous in the hands of a terrorist as an airplane. Would anyone else agree?

My theory is that a jet is the property of a commercial enterprise and it is up to them to decide whether I should be able to CCW or not. However if I am correct Amtrak is a government entitity. (Not 100% sure though!!!) Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

I'll agree that CCw should be legal on Amtrak, just as it should be legal anywhere else in the country with very few restrictions.

Amtrak is a private for-profit corporation , a majority of the stock owned by the government and the majority of its operating expenses paid by the government. But it is not, legally, a federal government entity. As I recall, some stock is owned by some railroads. In effect, Amtrak is a commercial rail transportation company that cannot meet its expenses through fares and express freight and therefor is subsidized by the government.

Amtrak is the result of private enterprise (railroads) not wanting to be in the passenger (long-haul) business and government intervention to preserve an alternate form of ground passenger transportation.

Prohibited Items
From the Amtrak website:

_____________

PROHIBITED ITEMS

The following kinds of items are prohibited as both checked and carry-on baggage:

Any type of gun, firearm, ammunition, explosives, or weapon.
Incendiaries, including flammable gases, liquids and fuels.
Large, sharp objects such as axes, ice picks and swords.
Corrosive or dangerous chemicals or materials, such as liquid bleach, tear gas, mace, radioactive and harmful bacteriological materials.
Batteries with acid that can spill or leak (except those batteries used in motorized wheelchairs or similar devices for mobility-impaired passengers).
Club-like items, such as billy clubs and nightsticks.
Fragile and/or valuable items (including but not limited to electronic equipment).
Animals (except service animals).
Oversized and/or overweight items.

In my area Amtrak inspects 'checked' luggage. Carry-on is subject to random inspection. I believe there is a bill before Congress to X-ray all luggage, checked and carry-on, at all Amtrak stations.

ride the rails

Wasn't it a man named Colin Ferguson who said "Those who don't learn from history are bound to repeat the same mistakes?" That was on the Long Island RR commuter train not that long ago.

I know for sure the Amtrak station in Seattle doesn't screen passengers. :uhoh:

Neither does the Amtrak in Chicago at Union Station. I usually get on in the suburbs but I do remember getting on in Chicago. I did see a large police presence but this was right after the Madrid bombing.

so what is the worst thing that can happen if you get caught in a place that has policies against concealed carry. i think probably nothing. hell i'd carry mine to church if i went. i carry it everywhere except the doctors office, court (if i have to go for my teenagers speeding tickets) or in schools, other than that its all fair game. i get a feeling of comfort knowing that i am proficient with my colt 45, just knowing that i never ever want to have to use it but its there if i NEED it.:)

I think at the very least, if it isn't clearly posted, they can ask you to leave. On private property, once they ask you to leave, it is tresspassing if you remain. At the most they can charge you with a crime depending on the circumstances. They don't necessarily need to be correct in their allegation to make your life miserable while you go about defending yourself against the charge.

What hasn't been mentioned regarding the train is that it is moving through differient states and municipal jurisdictions. Will you be subject to the local laws while in those particular jurisdictions?

Well, they could throw you off the train in Washington DC. I wonder what the DC lockup looks like?

Like any other jail, some's nicer than others, they're all jails. New visitors find it isn''t so much the facilities, but the company you get to keep and the new friends you make - :neener:
