And another Grizzly shot

Hey, It really is KodiakBeer. All this thread and the prior one I thought it was KodiakBear.

Why do you call the first man and woman stupid for being in the bear's territory and yet see no problem with a man and woman living in the bear's territory year-round?

I never said they were stupid for being in the bears territory. I said their actions were stupid, or at least sound so.

Everybody should hike Denali at least once in their lives, but they should be better prepared than these people.

What a good dog! That aside, it's very easy to second-guess the circumstances and interventions of others. It is a lot more difficult when one has to make the split-second decision under pressure.

For the record, Grizzlies are NOT an endangered species. Not even close.
as of 2009 they were listed
Legal status

The grizzly bear is listed as threatened in the contiguous United States and endangered in parts of Canada. In May 2002, the Canadian Species at Risk Act listed the Prairie population (Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba range) of grizzly bears as being wiped out in Canada.[46] In Alaska and parts of Canada however, the grizzly is still legally shot for sport by hunters. On January 9, 2006, the US Fish and Wildlife Service proposed to remove Yellowstone grizzlies from the list of threatened and protected species.[47] In March 2007, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service "de-listed" the population,[48] effectively removing Endangered Species Act protections for grizzlies in the Yellowstone National Park area. On September 22, 2009, a federal judge reinstated protection for the bears[49]

Alaska is not part of the contiguous United States. Nor is it anywhere near Jellystone.

We're DIFFERENT ;-) And ursus arctos is NOT repeat NOT considered threatened up here. There have been efforts to sub-divide the population and get protection for more isolated groups, but the bears are a tricky beast to pin down genetically. The same genetics can produce a huge range of sizes and lifestyles depending on local conditions.

Don't forget that he could fire those warning shots as there was a dog out there to keep the bear off of him. The dog gave him options, including trying to warn the bear off.
The dog was a mere distraction to the bear, one swipe of the paw and the dog is dead meat.

Some of you might find this picture interesting, if only to get a perspective on the relative size of Alaskan bears.

The five small claws near the top are from a black bear.

The center "middle sized" claw is from an interior Alaskan grizzly.

The large claw on the bottom is from a Kodiak grizzly/brown bear.

What's the caliber of that handgun?

i believe to court case only restored endangered status to the yellowstone population. were they ever classified as endangered up there?

OK, now I understand. Thanks for the follow-up.

I remember being on Green Island over in Prince William Sound when had a brown bear encounter. We were ambling up a creek that was packed with salmon going up to spawn, when suddenly there was a huge bear about 50 feet away. I was carrying a Ruger SB .44 mag, at the time it felt like a cork gun. We were downwind and the salmon splashing in the shallow creek was likely why the bear never heard us. As it was busy ripping the skin off a big salmon, we carefully walked backwards out of sight, did a hasty retreat to the skiff and got the hell out of there.

I have never hunted or killed a bear as had no desire to do so. I have busted gravel real close to black bears to sting them if they got to hanging around the home place. The oldest daughter was in the well house one time when a blacky stuck it's head in the door. She screamed and hit it in the face with a bucket. On hearing the scream and noise, grabbed a rifle off the rack, ran into the yard and fired a shot real close to it's feet. If one has never seen a bear run full tilt, it is hard to conceive they can move that fast. It left a blueberry scat trail for several yards when it bolted into the woods, so guess it literally scared the chit out of it.

None of my biz KodiacBeer, but I have become very leery of posting pics of guns with the SN front and center. Present company excepted on THR, but there are some very disreputable characters out in the cyber world.
