In keeping with the topic started regarding the kid harrassed at a DUI checkpoint, I had the chance to observe both overzelous over reacting cops this evening, as well as very respectful and very helpful cops tonight.

To begin let me say that after UF beat Ohio State to become the BCS National champions, making UF the only College to ever win two national titles (the other was in Basketball) in the same year, the entire town of Gainesville erupted into a huge rowdy celebration. Belive me, I am not exagerating when I say that police had blocked off about 10+ square blocks for a celebration that was truely wild and crazy.

During the partying numerous fireworks were being set off. I noticed someone next to me fire a bottle rocket into the air. As soon as this was done 5 Sheriff Deputies bum rushed him like he was a crack dealer on an episode of COPS. The deputies took him to the side, forcefully demanded he turn over all fireworks, then physically searched him. After they were conviced he didn't have any more they let him go. I know that this isn't near as bad as the treatment the kid at the DUI checkpoint had to endure, but it was definitely vastly different treatment given by local city officers and University PD.

The local City and University cops were GREAT. They didn't enforce open container laws and were receptive to why we were there, allowing use ALOT of freedom to express our joy. While the Deputies snubbed off students refusing to give any happy students "high fives", the local cops smiled and high fived students as they ran down the street. It seemed as though they were as just proud of our team as we was, actually celebrating along side of us. I can truely say that Gainesville and University PDs demonstated a deep respect for us student that is well worth praising them for.
