I have a couple of older 12ga shotguns; 1148 and model 37 to be exact. I am having intermittent issuse with ejection of the cheap walmart steel base stuff. My 835 eats it right up but these old girls will hold on to the hulls once in a while. It frustrating in the semi as it will feed another shell right into the back of the spent one. Is anyone else having issues? Chambers are polished and shiny.

I have this problem with one of my m37's. It (1947 make) does not like anything cheap. STS work the best.

Very common problem with cheap ammo in older guns. OTOH, another M37 (1946, this one) eats anything I feed it. Go figger.

My Beretta A300 Outlander is rendered a single-shot by cheap steel case ammo. Feed it brass with same charge and load, it runs all day. Im hoping it will smooth out with more use (probably has only 300-400 through it total), but might be a case of I just need to be less cheap and buy ammo guns were made to shoot.

Everybody is having problems with every kind of gun using the cheap crap from Walmart, etc.

If you want your expensive gun to work as designed?

Buy more expensive brass head shells it was designed to work with.

The cheap steel head shells are like buying the cheapest gas you can find to put in your new 500 HP Corvette.

I've got an 1148 Sportsman, and it eats anything I put in it. 1960 model if you can trust the Remington date codes on the barrel.

You wouldn't be the first to experience ejection/ extraction issues with cheapo ammo. It's probably not a problem with your particular guns.

What do the rims of the problems shells look like?

What RC said.

I have old, new and everything in between shotguns, and none of them will reliably cycle that garbage steel junk from Wally World. Buy SG shells with brass head hulls, and your problems will be go away. THE END

This is just what I thought. I haven't read anything on the subject but I suspected that the steel cased stuff was the issue. I was hoping for some "no" answers so I could justify making a new extractor in the shop. Thanks.

Depends on WHICH cheap Walmart ammo; the Federals are good and usually perform flawlessly, while the Winchester Universals are about the worst ammo ever made anywhere.

I dunno about this. My (70' SS Nova) 1924 Remington model 11 rocks just fine, even on the cheap stuff. Lol

This.

With me, it's steel shot, WINCHESTER Hi Speed number 2 or 3 steel. My Winchester 1400 autoloader doesn't seem bothered by the stuff, but my two Mossbergs don't get along well with it. The 2 3/4" stuff that I shoot rarely hangs in the barrel, but 3" or 3.5" in the 535, FORGET it. My buddy's 870s, same thing.

I shoot a SxS on doves, so I buy cheap. :D I've got limited access to Kent Fasteel, been wanting to try some. I guess I'm going to have to order some soon. I HOPE the stuff has a brass case. I often wish they'd bring back Active. Never had a problem with it. No metal except encased in the head, and the stuff reloaded GREAT. :D

My 11 and 1148 both had issues with cheap shells. The 11 was a lot worse. When I got them I broke them both down to bits and smoothed out any galling or rounded off edges I could attribute to wear. Once I squared up the rounded edge of the extractor claw it got a whole lot better. Pull your bolt out and check that claw over, if it's rounded off where it will easily let a shell slip by then you found the culprit.

I figured that I should square off the extractor with a stone. I have a mixed ammo can of 12 ga cheap stuff. I have brass case ammo 15 years ago and lots of steel case. As mentioned above, the Winchester sucks and the Federal works. I'll be more discriminate when I go to Walmart next.

I need to do that to my old 500, but my 535 is nearly new and doesn't have this problem. But, with a 3.5" load, it sticks and I have to slam the butt down on solid ground to get the round loose. But, I don't plan to fire much 3.5" in it, anyway. I prefer my 10 gauge for geese and it's a single shot H&R that doesn't have this problem.

Win Universal chokes up my 11-48. It feeds Estate, Rio, Rem game loads and Fed top gun just fine. When I shoot an informal game of skeet I use my 11-48 with the pink Federals. They shoot great and sometimes i think it plays head games on guys getting beat by the "pink shell guy"

I've got a mostly stock Saiga 12.
If you look around on the Saiga boards, Winchester Universal is the one brand that's almost guaranteed to cause jams.
So naturally, that's what I got 250 of for my birthday last year.
I figured I had nothing to lose, so I tried 'em out.
Much to my surprise, the Saiga ate 'em up like candy with zero problems, even out of the 20 round drum.

It shouldn't be - hopefully you cleaned everything and relubed before shooting; sometimes left over rust prevention can clog a port, so run a pipe cleaner through that. I shoot A400s and mine eat anything; yours should too.

Winchester Universals are GARBAGE.

Federal bulk has given me no grief in many hundreds of shells.

At several of the BSA shoots, we get scouts with brand new 870 Express guns that jam on steel head shells. Usually it's win universal. But occasionally it happens with gun club or federal/estate but not as often. At one of the turkey shoots*, one of the RSOs brought a drill, short length of cleaning rod, a 12ga bore brush, and some steel wool. He would pull the barrel on offending guns and run the steel-wool-wrapped brush in the chamber for a few seconds. That fixed the vast majority of the guns.

Matt.

*no actual turkeys were harmed at the event.

I find it impossible to believe that all these different models are having this issue because anyone who reads the forums knows it is only the 870 that has any issue with extractions. Please check to make sure your gun is not an 870 in disguise :).

The majority of these issues seem to occur with Winchester Universal - this stuff is pure crap and should avoided at any cost. Walmart sells other low priced ammo that does not cause these issues.

Most shotshells today have brass plated steel heads. The exceptions are top of the line Target loads - the ones that have championship titles and big money riding on them. Examples are Federal Gold Medal (paper and plastic), Winchester AA, and Remington STS. As far as I can determine, these along with Federal LE Buckshot loads are the only shotshells with all brass case heads.

As noted already, shells with brass plated steel case heads generally function well. Bottom line: As with all firearms, test your firearms for reliable function before relying on any particular ammunition product line.

Most I have seen aren't even bothering to plate the steel heads anymore - I believe one Remington SKU does but all of the others aren't wasting the time and money, especially on the cheap promo ammo which most folks don't bother to reload.
