Any Good Reason Not to Get a FN 5.7?

I was under the impression the 5.7 used a standard .224 bullet.
True, but 556 bullets, even light ones, are far heavier than the 28 grain projectiles used in the mighty S4 round. So if that kind of performance is to be realized via reloading, it seems to me that the sub 30 grainers chugging along at 2500+ fps is the order.

I haven't looked it up, and may do so, but are the "nominal" 5.7 bullets readily available?

Edit to add: So far, the only thing I'm seeing that comes close is the Hornasy 35 grain VMax and a Berger 30 grain. Not alot of choices there , but better than just one I suppose.

My Lyman's manual shows 35 to 45 grain bullets may be used. 40 grain bullets are in stock at Midway from several manufacturers.

Well I got my 5.7 MKII through gun broker and shot 100 rounds of ss197 through it.

No functional problems.

Gun appears well built. Ergonomics are fine for me... I normally wear a L to XL glove. The funny index finger safety location is actually pretty easy to operate.

Sights needed 1 click windage and the elevation was on with a 6 o'clock hold at 50 yards. I gave it 4 clicks down for a COM sight picture and it was zero'd.

Accuracy was good. I was shooting a 8 or 10 inch gong at 100 yards and could hit it almost every time rested on a bench. I was able to make many hits on it standing as well.

Downside? Trigger sucks ass for a single action. In fact the only single action triggers I can remember ever being as bad were on CZ handguns. I was expecting a good trigger as that is what I kept seeing in reviews, however mine blows. It has a fair bit of take up, no problem, then comes up hard, then has a solid 1/8" of somewhat gritty creep, then comes up hard again, then breaks. May as well be a Glock or XD trigger. It is reasonably light though, perhaps that is what some shooters think qualifies as "a good trigger"?

If the creep were glass smooth like a 3 gun AR trigger I could live with it, that is how I have my 10/22 speed gun setup. But I don't know if it will self smooth over time or not. I haven't had luck with that on other guns.

I think the 57 has mostly outlived its popularity. I had one for a long time and I couldn't make myself enjoy it for a real carry gun. Sure it could do it but it just seemed to be a fad gun. (For me, of course YMMV.)

It shot very well. It just wasn't a gun that I seriously considered to replace any other gun.

I got to try a friend's 5-7 yesterday, and was impressed. The trigger on his was reasonably crisp -- I didn't notice anything unusual -- so maybe there are some production variations? I was able to shoot a small 5 shot group at 30' -- about an inch. I shot other guns that same day, but didn't shoot them as well. I may have to get one, one of these days.

Ammo availability doesn't seem to be a problem around here, my local Gander has had cases in stock for months. I shoot it in an AR57 and really like it, accurate and very mild to shoot.
