Hey Gang.

I know a lot of people here live in East Tennessee. I might be moving back to Knoxville, and I was wondering if there are any good rifle ranges in the area. I'm currently a member of the Memphis Sports Shooting Association which is a very nice gun club, and was hoping there was something similar in or around K-Town.

Thanks.

hard to beat ORSA in oak ridge

orsa.nxs.net

1000yrd range with going on 30 stations
200 yrd benchrest range
small bore range
plinking range (no centerfire)
(plus shotgun/pistol/archery ranges)

ORSA is the best one around, but it is a members only range.

The one public range, John Sevier, is nice, but they have oddball hours of operation. Although they do have a beginners trap and skeet shoot on Monday nights which is a very nice program.

ORSA is probably your best bet. You need to be sponsored to apply for a membership, but that is easily done. Once you're in, $100 per year is the fee, just clean up after yourself.

Lots of matches held every month: John C. Garand, IPSC, High Power, Trap, Skeet, just to name a few. Plus lots of workshops/training events.

Thanks! The ORSA sounds like it's exactly what I'm looking for. I've sent them an email to ask if my current gun club can sponsor me for membership.

no, only members can sponsor new members. however, if you show up to a few CMP clinics, or to the action pistol range on saturdays for Steel Challenge or IPSC, you won't have any problems finding a sponsor.

for new members who just absolutely don't konw anyone, they can join on a probationary period, where you have 1 year to find a member to sponsor you.

in short... it's not a problem.

btw, you did specify "rifle range", which I imagine is why no one is listing all the pistol ranges like Coal Creek Armory... Did you really mean rifle only?

in crossville, i think you pretty much just step out on your back porch and start blasting. :)

Yeah, I was thinking rifle in particular. But according to the ORSA website...

A SPONSOR MAY ALSO BE AN ORGANIZATION: The Board of Directors will accept proof of membership or affiliation with a recognized firearms, archery, or conservation related organization in lieu of a ORSA member-sponsor. The organization must have goals or objectives that do not conflict with the goals and objectives of ORSA. A photocopy of the membership card will be considered proof of membership and should be included with the application.

I was hoping my membership with the MSSA would count.

I shoot with my teacher at Tac 2 in Greeneville. It is awesome and usually empty. THey have everything from a cowboy saloon to a 200 yd rifle range
