Im just about to get in to Rifles im tired of shooting just my .357 Mag
Im not looking to hunt with them mostly for Plinking at the range just because its Fun to shoot them. I just like Rifles allot and I always wanted one. so I have been looking around and wanted to get ideas from Experts like you guys maybe give out a pointer or two. there are a couple that I want to buy and im looking to spend up to $500 or $600 on each or cheaper if I can but at the same time I don’t want a Crappy Rifle

1) I wanted a 7.62X54R -- I wanted this because the Rounds are Sooo cheap but after some reading the accuracy isn’t all that.

2) I want a Rifle that’s .223 again the fact that ammo is so cheap

3 I want one that will shoot the 7.62X39 CHEAP AMMO AGAIN But is it accurate?

4) I want a 308 I heard the ammo is pretty common and its Good size

And last I don’t know if I want to get the 30-06 I heard it’s very popular but compared to the ones I want to get is this one any different?

By the way I only like the Bolt actions style. Wood finish if possible stainless steel just because for cleaning it’s easy to spot the powder burns.

also if anyone can tell me what the Max range would be for each lets say For hunting or acurate range for plinking

Thanks in advance
:)

7.62x54R isn't "inaccurate" as such, you just have to figure out which flavor of surplus ammo your Mosin likes. Mine will peg spent shotgun shells at 150 yards all day long with Polish light ball.

The surplus rounds have dried up quite a bit for the time being, but if you're looking for superior accuracy you can always try new-production ammo - pricey, but probably much more consistent than the surplus stuff.

The 7.62x39 isn't a long-range round as such, but it should be good for a couple hundred yards without too much bullet drop. Out of an AK, don't expect wonders in the accuracy department.

You won't be disappointed with a Mosin - for a couple hundred bucks you'll get a rifle that's built like a tank and accurate enough (after all, the most prolific sniper in history used one) and a couple thousand rounds of ammo to keep it fed for a long while. Be warned, though, they are an addiction. :)

What specifically do you want to do? If you're going to be target shooting at close range, a .223 would do you just fine - if you're planning on doing a lot of long-range shooting you may want to look at the .308 (or the Mosin, whatever).

If you just want to plink, get a .22 rifle - for around a hundred bucks you can pick up any number of excellent, accurate autoloaders (Rem 597, Savage, Marlin 60 and so on...) and four hundred dollars or so will buy you a CZ, which is a beautiful walnut and deep blue steel number that's more accurate than you are.

well let's see;

1) I wanted a 7.62X54R -- I wanted this because the Rounds are Sooo cheap but after some reading the accuracy isn’t all that.

[a.] Ammo is no longer cheap, and getting hard to find.
[b.] Some 7.62 rifles are very accurate
.

2) I want a Rifle that’s .223 again the fact that ammo is so cheap.

[a.] There are cautions about using milsurp ammo in modern bolt
actions. Something about free bore and high pressures.
Use caution
.

3 I want one that will shoot the 7.62X39 CHEAP AMMO AGAIN But is it accurate?

[a.] Depends on ammo source. Good accurate ammo may not be cheap. 150 yards for hunting , maybe 200yds for targets

4) I want a 308 I heard the ammo is pretty common and its Good size

[a.] Good choice. Lots of possibilities. Components for hand loading are numerous. Not the best for heavy [200grns+] bullets, but not really necessary for most shooting. 400yds for hunting if your are really good !

And last I don’t know if I want to get the 30-06 I heard it’s very popular but compared to the ones I want to get is this one any different?

[a.] -06 is probably the most versital cartridge out there. Big bullets at max range, 110 grains for varmints. My Savage-06 has never shot a group bigger than one inch. Down side is it is more expensive to shoot even with reloads.

By the way I only like the Bolt actions style. Wood finish if possible stainless steel just because for cleaning it’s easy to spot the powder burns.

also if anyone can tell me what the Max range would be for each lets say For hunting or accurate range for plinking.

Bottom line is get what you want. From what you have stated I would suggest a heavy barreled Savage in .308. Accura-trigger is the cats meow. JMHO

You're going backwards, joe2004. Get out there and handle some rifles and see where your tastes lie. Worry about the round it fires after that.

Is that even possible???

1) I wanted a 7.62X54R -- I wanted this because the Rounds are Sooo cheap but after some reading the accuracy isn’t all that.

IMO, accuracy is plenty good with surplus ammo considering it's 50+ years old coming out of a 60+ year old firearm. I also keep in mind that surplus ammo will (and is right now) drying up and eventually you'll have to buy commercial ammo for it. Look at what happened to 8mm. You can still find 7.62x54R cheap(ish) now, but it's harder to find and pricier than it was 6-12 months ago.

3 I want one that will shoot the 7.62X39 CHEAP AMMO AGAIN But is it accurate?

Look at a Saiga, they can be had for sub $300. Define "accurate"? I don't think there are many tack drivers chambered in that caliber. I have several AK47's that'll do 6-8" groups @100m with ease with irons, with me sitting un benchrested. That's pretty accurate IMO.

4) I want a 308 I heard the ammo is pretty common and its Good size

Common? Yeah, I suppose so. It's also very expensive, especially now that surplus .308 NATO has dried up.

And last I don’t know if I want to get the 30-06 I heard it’s very popular but compared to the ones I want to get is this one any different?

It shares similar ballistics to the 7.62x54R

I have a 223 (Rem 700VLS) shoots like is has eyes. (.411" groups @100 yards)

I have a 308 in an old 1917 Rem Enfield shoots good needs some work.

I have a 30-06 Rem Model 30 express. Kicks like a mad mule.

I also have a Jap Type 99 in 6.5x57mm this is a dream of a little gun.

It all depends on what you want to do with your rifle.

The one I shoot the most is the 223. Why it is fun to shoot soft ont he recoil easy on the pocket.

Right now I only have a 100 yard range to shoot at. but soon I will be blasting ground hogs at 200 to 400 yards with the 223.

You should never fire 5.56 nato ammo in a rifle chambered for a 223 Rem. The PSI in the 5.56 is higher than a 223. This could cause to to become seperated from vital parts of your body. Plus most military ammo uses a 63 gr bullet you need a rifle with a 1-9" twist barrel to shoot them good. most bolt guns have a much slower 1-12" twist.

If you just want a rifle to plink with go get yourself a Ruger 10/22. Make sure you get some 50 round mags for it to extend the fun. The basic 10/22 will run you around $200 + scope and extra mags. Plus you can do so much to a 10/22 it is funny. I sold mine and wish I had never parted with it. a 22 lr is the cheapest ammo you will ever find.

For just a plinking rifle that is what I would get if you want some more umph get your self a 223 either a bolt gun (Savage or Remington) or get an AR they cost more money but they are a blast to shoot and you can get a bunch of different gadgets to go on them.

Right now the CMP is taking orders for M1 Garands, which come in your price range. They also have surplus 30-06 and it's about the cheapest ammo deal going at 23-25 cents per round shipped. Lots of history, lots of fun. A bit more involved than picking one up at the store, but they'll ship the rifle right to your door.

Savage, Remington, Tikka have enviable accurasy reputations. All are available with wood stocks. I vote for .308 because I've been having great luck with it 36 years!

There is a company in Montana that makes chamber adapters so you can fire commie 7.62 X 39 ammo in your .308. But you should use a micrometer to ensure the company didn't make the bullets too large in diameter for your .308 bore. Better safe than sorry.

Good shooting to you.

How about the CZ rifles, have you looked at them? Excellent accuracy with a nice single set trigger for when you want to shoot groups. Available in all the calibers you mentioned except 7.62x54. It's one of the brands gaining popularity the fastest.
